Cardiff is cheaper than Bristol and ticks all your boxes.

I would say Bristol too (I'd move there if I could afford to) but without knowing your circumstances it's difficult to be anything other than vague. For instance:

    are you renting or buying?
what sort of work do you want to when you move?
    what's your budget?

I don't think you should worry too much about what universities are local to you as the chances are that your children will want to get away from home anyway - I couldn't have imagined living at home when I went to Uni (although at that time it wouldn't have been an option anyway as it was before every college in the country decided to become a University).

Thanks everyone, it's interesting that there are some recurring contenders. I have been seriously considering the Leeds area and out towards the coast, that area appeals very much.

I absolutely *love* Edinburgh, too. It is high on my list for sure.

To answer the other questions, we would be buying, budget is up to around £320,000 for minimum 3 beds (all these areas seem to be well within that). I want to run my own business and I'm toying with the idea of perhaps running a guesthouse, among a few other things. But will be topping up any income from that with hourly work -care, childcare etc.

Glasgow? You'll soon need the international airport to get back to Britain...

A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

Liverpool if the sea is more important. Manchester for a better airport and better train links, plus it's a bigger city. I live in East Cheshire, about 5 miles from Manchester airport. Manchester city centre is 20 mins away on the train. Areas around south Manchester (didsbury, chorlton) would be even better suited for city life and handy for the university. Plus peak district is on your doorstep and lake district and North Wales are also easy to get to for countryside.

I live in East Cheshire too. Originally from Manchester though. We have everything bar the beach although were only an hour from the beach. But they sometimes build a fake beach in spinningfields... not the same though.
