So if you have your own business you'll understand the difference between £200ph wage and £200 ph overheads?

Yep, i sure do but £200 ph before deductions is nice money if you can get it........... ;-]

Does that not depend on what the deductions are?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

dentists work hard for the money they get! expecially nhs ones - there is not a lot of profit in providing nhs once lab fees and overheads etc come off. feel bad for them. pvt is where the real money is. but compared to what dentists earn the measley 11500 a dental nurse earns is nasty!! i woudl like to see a dentist attempt to work a full day without a nurse!! lmao
love you lots like jelly tots :o
  • I have a very low view of dentists...we have spent over 10K in the last five years on dental work for me and my hubby, and still not sorted... we ended up going to spain last year for treatment, just to save 4K.. I do not have a lot of sympathy for these greedy dentists in the UK...

I can't believe the amount of comments defending the ridiculous fees that dentists charge...... especially on a money saving site.....
You do your best to save money all year only to hand it (+extra) over to someone who smiles sweetly to themselves as they jump into their top of the range Audi & drive into the sunset.......

I think the more important question is whether or not you are happy with your dentist and the treatment you get there. If you are then you need to put a value on that, if not then yes its too expensive and you should try elsewhere.

Yes but my value & their value don't meet in the middle. Trying elsewhere isn't an option as i've yet to hear of an inexpensive dental practice...... ;-]

  • I'm sure Tescos will get in on the act soon. It's just a pity that no one blames the government for the state of dental care instead of slinging mud at each other over costs. Do we really want to go back to the days where people have mouths full of black teeth because they can't afford dental care?

Considering that people will pay a few hundred pounds for a car "service" that consists of not much more than an oil and filter change, personally I think that £80 or whatever for a half hour appointment and a filling is reasonable. I had the attention of a dentist and assistant, plus cost of materials, practice overheads (heating, lighting, receptionists etc), equipment and the factor for someone having to work on akward access and a stressed patient.

So, for me, the value/cost equation works out well. I regard my teeth as being more important than a lot of other things. The very low price of white goods/electronics has totally skewed expectations of what things cost. Imagine that all dentists said "we've had enough of staring down at plaque ridden stinking mouths and are giving up (a fair few do)". What salary do you think would compensate for that? If I was to exchange my current job (interesting engineering/software/development work, with good quality of life) with filling teeth, I'd be wanting to earn £80K to be bothered with it.
    Happy chappy
