You couldn't give me all the money in the world to be a dentist, a miserable job with the highest suicide rate.
I pay whatever is charged, its worth it. I'm only in there for 20 minutes. That unlucky bastard is in there nearly 9 hours a day, he deserves a medal and the huge salary. Talk about mind numbing boredom, if I was in that horrible little place looking at people's ugly mouths all day I'd be reaching for the shotgun too.0 -
Hi - how would I go about checking out a dentist with regards to implants. I need 2 teeth replaced and am thinking about getting implants. I've been told they will cost £1800 each! and that I should make sure the dentist who carries out the work is very experienced. How do I find out if the dentist is very experienced? Is this the cheapest price available? Is there anway to get the work done cheaper? I did think about going abroad but don't think it would be feasible as from what I've heard there's lost of anti and post implant care needed. Anyone give me advice please?
Thanks!0 -

Well thanks for cheering me up after a long day!!!
It's not the gobs that drives us to topping ourselves, it's working with loads of wimmin all day!!!!!!
We're not top anymore now. We're 2nd or maybe 3rd, Vets are above us, and I think farmers moght be as well.
As well as motive, you need the means. Vets have access to some pretty powerful drugs, and farmers always have a gun or two to hand.
Takes a bit more planning to top yourself with a suction tube!!! And by the time you've figured it out, you probably realise life's not that bad anyway! How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Oh I don't mind working with woman. As long as they are hot.
I have noticed my dentist does seemingly only employ very young and pretty assistants. I guess you have to have some perks, eh?0 -

The best way to get in touch with a good implant person is to get your own general dentist to refer you to the specialist he chooses.
Your dentist will be in a much better position to know who is good and who isn't.
Plus - if you are referred by your dentist, then he is partially responsible for the outcome. If something bad happens, then as well as a case against the specialist who did it, you also have a case against the dentist who referred you to that specialist. (This is only in the case of incompetance - sometimes things go wrong with treatments for unforseeable reasons). But anyway, it means a dentist has to be careful about who he referrs to, and to know the qualifications and experience of the person he chooses.
If you don't have a general dentist, then this is the thing to find first. As it will be with this dentist that the day to day aftercare will be coordinated through as well. How to find a dentist.

*COUGH* Does that apply to us females too then?0 -
Story goes like this.....
Holiday in France, 2nd last evening, thought I have a big bit of grit in my mouth whilst eating...turns out to be the gold filling plus side of a single tooth had come away.
Waited 1 month for an appointment....no one taking NHS patients any more in my home town.
Appointment for 4.pm....called at 4.02pm.
Initial assessment, everything else ok, 2 mins prep work with drill, 11 mins work, gluing said parts back onto original tooth, no other materials used nor x-ray etc......13 mins work, 1 minute pleasantries.
Bill £94...for private care.
Seems reasonable too you.......?
The overheads for a Dental Practice are very high, dental nurses, receptionist to pay as well as rent etc. Also dental materials are very costly. (if you lost the side wall of your tooth as well as the inay the dentist would have needed some sort of adhesive to put it back!!) Tell me if this was a bill for a pet from the vet would you be unhappy??? Prob. not people always seem happier to pay a high price for pet care but not their own health.MFW - We've only gone and blooming done it!May 2013:j0 -

[quote=Toothsmith;7840815]Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.
Bit of an irrelavant quote from JFK I suppose, but bear with me.
What is your girlfriend worth to her employer?
I have one dental nurse on £10 per hour. She's worth that to me. I would probably pay her more if I ever thought someone else was in a position to tempt her away from me.
From a business point of view, I have to pay her as little as I think I can get away with, as ultimately it is the patient that's paying her. And, of course, I don't want all my patients to bu££er of to Hungary where the nurses are paid the equivalent of £6 a week! :Dquote
BUT - I don't want to loose her either, as she is an asset to the practice. She is good with the patients, has done lots of courses and is very well qualified, is good at her job, helps me with the running of the practice, makes very good business suggestions, comes up with some very efficient working methods, and I cannot think how I would manage without her.
How does your girlfriend fit with that description?
I have also employed nurses that I have felt I have been overpaying on minimum wage!!!!!!!!
If they turn up late, have sickies at the drop of a hat, show no initiative, can't pass the dental nurses qualification, think it's ok to prop up the reception desk chatting to a receptionist whilst patients are waiting, completely fail to grasp the importance of thoroughly cleaning instruments between patients, etc etc..... Then basically they are a waste of space.
Please, Please, Please tell me that your nurse knows her worth, you do let her know every now and again how much you appreciate her don't you? Us Dental Nurses are simple soles and often a 'Thank You' at the end of a stressful day means (almost) as much as a payrise.MFW - We've only gone and blooming done it!May 2013:j0
