Everybody's on a real roll at the moment. Brilliant results:A
Aesop, gobsmacked at your £50 for what seems like so little effort (just a few minutes you said). Really chuffed for you. well done:j:j:j
After all my picking people's brains, especially the very patient Aesop, on smartphones I'm still wondering whether to get one:o. Now I can actually afford to buy a cheap one I'm worried that the day-to-day cost of using it will be beyond my budget.
I've never had a smartphone, just have the very basic PAYG mobile that I've had for about 10 years. Use it purely to carry with me in case of emergencies, all it does is voice calls and texts. Topped up with £10 at Christmas, still most of that credit left:j.
My budget on DMP is very tight indeed and only includes a budget of £3 a month for my mobile (which is more than I use:rotfl:). Can't afford much more than that and if I'm using the new smartphone for all the money-making apps etc that you all benefit from I suspect I'll need to top up by a lot more than that:eek:
Now I can afford to buy the phone I'm not sure I can afford to run it:(
It looks as if I make quite a lot of money 'on the side' via various challenges through selling stuff, surveys etc, but this is mainly for emergencies (and I've had so much car trouble lately that I just couldn't have paid for otherwise). Plus, have vet fees for the cat any time now and nothing budgeted for that. No credit cards or overdraft, just what I can save from elsewhere. Am now saving every penny towards a new (well, new to me anyway, probably pretty ancient by most people's standards) car as I don't think my present one will be around for much longer being so old now. Living in a rural area with nearest infrequent bus service over 3 miles away a car is a lifeline not a luxury.
So, do I buy the cheap smartphone or not?????? Sorry for 'going on' a bit, I'm so used to not spending money on myself that I'm panicking a bit at the prospect:o0 -
carbootcrazy - I'm an mser.... :money:
you don't need to use the apps that require data, or :money::money: you could buy one of the gifgaf sims with data on payg.
All phones work on wifiso certain stuff can be done at home over wifi.
the bounts app, not sure if it uses data.
I know people with pyg phone and only have £10 credit for months, as hardly use it for calling people and if package has unlimited texts to numbers, text them and tell them to call you:rotfl:
I have someone who bought a phone, no credit on it, uses purely wifi....
and the app i did last night, just needs you to text people. if your sim has unlimited texts then that's cool. and you only need to text 5
onepulse uses wifi to send you surveys so can be done at home.
have I convinced you yet?I would not intentionally put you into debt, that is not my aim. and you don't need to get into debt over a phone xx0 -
Thanks, Aesop, you're a star:A
You've helped me a lot with your explanation, I imagined as soon as you start using the phone for anything it just runs the credit down. Didn't realise about the wi-fi:o. I'm totally ignorant about these things.
Will go ahead and get one then (will be nice to be part of the 21st century at last), especially as I have £15 of Argos vouchers anyway that need spending soon. I'll see how it goes, if it works out too expensive I'll just have to use it less;)0 -

exactly. do you have unlimited wifi at home? also who is your current sim with 02? is it based on your area coverage?0 -

I have standard broadband with 10GB usage limit (the lowest limit they do) and have never even been anywhere near using that much! I downgraded from Unlimited Broadband when I went on the DMP to save money as I couldn't justify (to myself)paying for inessentials. Being rural, broadband speed is pretty slow but not as bad as some areas I've read about. Adequate for most things.
Have just been on to BT and for only £3 a month extra I can get totally unlimited broadband (and Wi-Fi, obviously) and all sorts of little extras so I've just 'signed up' to it.
I have an Orange SIM, not sure about area-coverage that you mentioned:o. Will keep that one in my old basic 'emergency' mobile and get another SIM for the new phone. The phone you mentioned is tied to EE but could get it unlocked if you think another operator's SIM offers better scope/value.
This is a whole new world for me, never thought I'd be a smartphone owner:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Hiya
Not impressed as my lasagne/casserol dish fell on the floor because of the washing machine becoming possessed (don't ask), so need a new one. worst thing was that I had just made a lush lasagne with the rest of the butcher lean mince I had, and used fresh pasta sheets as a treat. Needless to say the weekend I've had made me just burst in to tears!! Just 2 weeks after a broken washer too.
SO I'm thinking of getting a stoneware dish, and was wondering if they are worth it? or just stick to a glass one? I have £20 worth of compliments vouchers that I can use in some shops towards it.Make £5 a day in August£21.54/£155

ooh proud Mummy MSE moment :Ta new convert to the world of smartphones
yes get phone unlocked, and apply for lots of free sims through topcashback where they pay you for ordering a sim. if they still do that, or iMutual, they used to. I got an ee sim and got paid £3.50 a while ago.
extra spare sims for other networks come in very handy for allsort of stuff. so keep themand definitely get phone unlocked, around here they do it for £5. it is worth the investment.
and you need an 02 sim for when you go into townyou can use 02 free wifi.
ooh so excited :j:j:j:j just going to check giffaff
well to start with you can have cashback for ordering a giffgaff sim lol

Carbootcrazy My dad had me specifically scour the internet so he could have the same, exact modal of phone he has had for years :rotfl: which is an old nokia that has a small black and white screen! I had to even put all the settings so they were the same such as ring tone and add the contacts as they were not saved to his sim. I even gave him my old laptop as he was wanting one, (mum refused to buy him a new one) but has switched it on once! He is very much make do and mend with a lot of things.Make £5 a day in August£21.54/£155
