Advice pls on a broadband provider... no bundle, just want broadband!

Options
Afternoon!

I've just recently moved into a brand new flat that had never had a phone line in it. I've gone with BT as past experience has made me realise that if you ever want any of the good deals invariably you have to have a BT line.

At the mo I've just got BT's option 2 for their calls on evenings & weekends. I now want to find a broadband package. BT are offering broadband for about £8 for the 1st 6 months and then it goes up to £18. I don't want to go with VirginMedia as I was with them (NTL originally) at my last place... and all I will say is never again and I'm still in dispute with them over it which is still being dealt with by their complaints.

I've had a look at Martin's write-ups and then went on to the forum and just became more confused if I'm honest.

I basically use the t-internet for banking, ebay-ing, catching up with friends and checking this very useful site out. I have a laptop and ideally I would like the freedom of being able to sit wherever in my flat... plus I might be getting a flatmate and I'm guessing they'll have some form of computer and be wanting to go on the net too.

Anyone got any great ideas? Like I said I've literally only just got my BT landline so I'm guessing I'm tied in for 12 months.

Look forward to any suggestions and bye for now and have a lovely afternoon!

Although not very popular with many people, Plusnet do a £9.99 a month broadband (broadband your way option 1). http://www.plus.net/residential/?home=resindextop

If you don't want to do gaming, peer to peer or mega downloading, you should find this OK.

Although it is a monthly contract, you would need to stay for 12 months to avoid having to repay the connection fee.

For voice calls, you might want to check Heinz's advice on how to get the cheapest pone calls. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=1598074&postcount=3

The plusnet 'your way option 1' will be of no use to you, especially if you get a flatmate as it has a limit of 1GB per month! What a joke!

Another thing in the small print:
It is likely that speeds no greater than 2Mb will be achieved at peak usage times due to contention in our network and our suppliers' networks.

    Rip-off merchants!

well in my opinion its always best to go for an unlimited isp.
beware of these so called deals from orange, virgin, BT which for first few months are half price & tie you in & are limited.

the cheapest around at the moment is fast4 , just now switched to them myself. for £15.95 its a monthly contract. free activation.
  • I have found Namesco broadband to be very good.
    £11 95 monthly contract 2GB, 512 speed.
Customer service 0845 number, not that I have needed to use it.

    Good Luck whatever you choose.

Not a limit but an included allowance. If you want more you either pay as you go and be billed for the extra, or upgrade to have more included. The OP's projected usage would have a hard time reaching 1G per month anyway. Also, any surfing between midnight and 8am is unmetered (free) and doesn't come out of the allowance.

Why pay extra for an unlimited broadband account when you aren't going to be using it that much? You can always upgrade or migrate if the account becomes inappropriate.

I had no problems with tesco broadband when I had that in my last place. Yu get CC points on that too and to be honest I would recommend that in a heartbeat.

The BT broadband I have now also came through quidco where I got 30 for ordering it ( despite already having the BT line) Im not as impressed with this i have to say- would have preferred tesco but they threatened 2 weeks to connect, which I just couldnt handle.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

It would not be very cost effective then would it, having to pay extra each month! ISP's who provide pathetic packages like this should be named so that the less knowledgeable are not conned.

Rubbish it is easy to exceed 1GB per month on dial-up and not everyone is nocturnal. Any ISP offering an ADSL max connection limited to 1GB normal usage is taking the p!ss.
It is likely that speeds no greater than 2Mb will be achieved at peak usage times due to contention in our network and our suppliers' networks.

They are also admitting to underfunded networks! Rip-off merchants - avoid.

Have a look at Tiscali. Uncapped and very reliable service for me. Think there're some special offers, too.

Tiscali is NOT uncapped and is the most complained about ISP.

;) Maybe I'm below their various radars (e.g., usage and the Murphy scale of broadband headaches).

Nevertheless, Tiscali is member of ISPA and still recommended "independently" (top10broadband, uswitch, et al).
