Nail Tech Has Wrecked My Nails

Hi all,

As the title says, I have been having my nails done by a lovely girl who came to my house...she has certs etc.

My nails were flaky prior to this so I decided upon silk wraps to give me the opportunity to 'grow my own'. I also had gel polish on.

As I had the gel polish, in order to remove it without removing the silk wrap, the girl basically filed away all the colour - sawing backwards and forwards. This has caused tremendous damage to my nails - my nails are now thin, soft, very sore and have holes in! So much so, I can see my pulse in a couple of them...ouch.

Can anyone recommend anything to get them back to at least not being sore and then some strength? I am scared they will be wrecked permanently because of the sawing action and vibration across th nail bed.

Good grief...what on earth has she done! That makes me cringe.

There are lots of good products out there to improve the condition of nails but if yours are damaged as bad as you indicate I'm not sure any of them will help at this stage. If you have holes in your nails I'm not sure you should be putting any product on them. Will it not just sink into your nail bed? Ouch ouch ouch!

Maybe you should get some professional advice, from a good nail tech/salon.

Thank you. I think that's what I'll do. I used to go to a good salon but was recommended this girl. She was only slightly cheaper than the salon as well! So I wasn't trying to cut corners. Was handy because she came to the house.

The holes are tiny, but there all the same. And they are so tender. I have just knocked one (not particularly hard) when getting some bread out and I could have cried!!!

I mentioned to her it felt tender and hot when she was filing but she said it was "because she was filing". So I thought it would stop once she had finished. I didn't realise the destruction it was causing long term!!

I'm feeling right sorry for myself and am nowhere near where I thought my nails would be now. I thought they would get stronger!!

I thin kstarry is right, you need to let them recover now before putting anything else on them. It sounds horrendous! Did she say anything about the state of them when she was finished??

They were covered neatly with the gel polish so you couldn't see them. They were pink looking but as I say, she just gave the impression that was normal and some people's nails go like that.

One of the wraps and gel polish popped clean off the other day, followed by another 2 yesterday. I was gonna get her to come back but because I saw the state of them and felt the soreness, I cancelled! I think they probably feel worse now because they are exposed. At least with the gel polish on, they were protected a bit.

Someone mentioned coconut oil rubbed on them regularly. Might give that a go.

Oh you poor thing :( She has filed away way too much. Lots of cuticle oil daily and OPI Nail Envy is good for helping strengthen nails.

I agree that Nail Envy would be ideal for getting your nails back in shape, I'm just not sure you should be using it while you've got holes in your nails.

There used to be a good nail technician on on this forum, I bet she could advise you what's best...I'll try to remember her user name.

    Thanks all.

They really are painful at the moment. I keep catching them. Not banging them or anything, just normal, every day knocks and it is actually making me swear :D

Ironically, I actually have some nail envy that I was using prior to the treatments and some OPI avoplex cuticle oil. I have also asked Mr Anon to get me some coconut oil when he pops to town later. H&B have their penny offer on so will get 2 jars and use one in the kitchen and one for 'beauty'!
  • OP, it sounds like this girl may need to be reported to whoever she is certified under. I'd find out her details, and perhaps do so.

The thing that worries me most, and makes me advise you to do so, is that it wasn't even that she could have been unaware that her technique was too rough - you told her it was hurting, yet she continued regardless!

Alternatively, contact her, tell her what has happened, and she may be happy to try and 'put it right' with some form of compensation.

I know I probably should and at least think about others who may use her. I just feel for her. She is just starting out and as I say, was really happy with herself! I wouldn't want to jeopardise that for her. And I certainly don't want to cause trouble. She said she hasn't had any other complaints..I suppose that might just be a matter of time.

I'm not sure there's any body I could report her to either. I think she just did one of these courses that are available.
