I've looked and can't find that online - I'm just going round in circles.
Can you give me a link to the assigning page that I would use after I receive the retention certificate ID, please?
It's slightly tricky as the civil service is currently subject to purdah regulations due to the upcoming election. This means that they can't publicise the URL for the assign service until it's over.
HOWEVER - if you email retention.online@dvla.gsi.gov.uk with your request I'm sure they'll be able to sort you out.0 -

Glad I just saw this! I noticed online that the assign a plate service was in testing but couldn't find whether or not it was now live. I have just emailed the above so hopefully they will supply the link as it would make things so much easier!
Update: Just got a reply already with the link and FAQ guide. excellent0 -

Interesting, do you know if that's the reason why there is currently no generally available url for people to send HMRC a request to transfer unused partner personal allowance?0 -
Sorry to tag on some else's thread but my question is similar.
A family member has a registration plate on a vehicle we would like and they would like the one on our vehicle. We want to swap.
Would we both do separate 'transfer to another vehicle requests' simultaneously and both pay £80 each? or is there a one hit way?
My concern is that whichever transfer went through first would cause us to lose the other vehicles number back into the DVLA pool.
The only way I can see to avoid this is a complex process or doing retention on one so a new number would be issued to that vehicle (?), doing a transfer (so another new number would be issued again) then recalling the retention back to the first vehicle. Sounds like a lot of expensive number plates to be made up!0 -

Honestly I'd keep it as simple as possible here and there is no one hit solution. Just retain the two numbers for £80 each online - you will be sent a new V5C and a Retention Certificate for each vehicle/number. When the documents arrive, then just assign the numbers you retained back to each others cars.
Just a quick thought, would either of these numbers make the intended vehicle appear younger than they are? That's not allowed.
I'm not allowed to post links, but for a clear write up about the retain and assign services - have a look on the BMWland forum under general advice.0 -

Thanks, I have since found an old thread with the same sort of question and someone was told by the DVLA that they could do a straight swap, they just had to let them know that's what was happening. That was in 2010 so hopefully still applies. No problem with age both vehicles have 'old' numbers.
Cheers.0 -

There was a thread much more recently than 2010.
Both cars may have old numbers, but for instance if you have a 1989 car, you could not put a Jxxxyyy plate on it.0 -

How old is 'old' though.
That would be fine if the numbers were from before 1963.
Any number after that is age related and can't be put on a car that is older than the number.
For example you can't put a 1998 number on a 1994 vehicle.0
