Changing private plate

Wife has a private plate. At some point she'll be getting rid of the current car & replacing it. She's hoping for a part ex to get it all done in one.
How do you go about switching the plate over? And what costs are involved?
Obviously if she goes to a garage tomorrow & buys a car & px hers in, she can't just tell them she's taking the plate with her & they'll have to get a new plate assigned to it.
Also, our local DVLA centre which was a good journey away has closed. So the next nearest one is going to be miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiles away.

Get the plates put on retention before part exing the car, it'll cost £105 made up of £80 +£25 retention for 12 months.0

last time i changed cars I did just what you said
I drove into the dealer with my private plates on bought a new car and told the dealer i wanted the plates transferred to the new car
the salesman sorted everything and did it as part of the deal only downside was it took nearly a month to get it sorted so delayed picking up the new car
some dealers will do it for the £80.00 DVLA fee plus an admin fee for the time they spend on the transfer
what i would do now is fill in the V317 application to retain a registration number get the plate on retention and then go car shopping, when you find a new car give the dealer the retention certificate and ask the dealer to assign it to the new car0 -

Oh so you don't need to pay to transfer to the new car & then pay again to get your current car a different registration?0

No, the current registration gets a certificate to allow you to use it for a qualifying car, I have not heard of the retention fee being waived other than in the earlier posting.0 -
Do you know when the £25 retention fee was dropped?
Or was it not applicable due to owning both cars at the same time?
sorry not sure of the exact date but if you have a look at the top of the new V317 retention form it quotes £80.00 for transfer and £80.00 for retention
www.gov.uk/V317.pdf6. Retaining a registration number
You can apply to remove a registration number from a vehicle and hold it on a retention document (V778) for 10 years if you’re the registered keeper of the vehicle.
You can retain the registration number in your name or someone else’s name.
This costs £80 for 10 years.
You’ll need the retention document when you want to assign the number to a vehicle again.
that is the latest info from the DVLA0 -

You can do it online is less than 3 minutes - https://www.personalisedvehicleregistration.service.gov.uk/retain/vehicle-lookupOld dog but always delighted to learn new tricks!0 -
The exact date the fees changed over was 9th March.
As posted above, you can do this online now. The service will give you your retention certificate ID and the new registration number for you existing vehicle, so you can go about: assigning your personalised number to you new car immediately (there's actually an online assignment service available too - your dealer should know about it) and getting plates made up (if you need to).0 -

I've looked and can't find that online - I'm just going round in circles.
Can you give me a link to the assigning page that I would use after I receive the retention certificate ID, please?0
