Not quite on the same lines, but certainly relevant for this thread.
I'd noticed that one of the home computers (W98SE) was running a bit funny recently. Normally it runs fast as lightning, I'd noticed for a couple of days that it was a bit 'sticky' and not running as good as it normally does. I ran all the antivirus and spyware programs I use. I also ran a couple of cleanup programs. None of this made any difference. I decided to give the case a clean out, and get rid of any dust build up.
Well frankly, I'm amazed that the CPU hadn't fried. The heatsink was solid with dust. It took a while to clean out the insides well. Since plugging everything back together, the computer is back to its old lightning mode.
The reason I'm posting this is to let people be aware that heat build up inside the case can affect the performance of a computer. If anyone is having trouble with their machine and has tried all the software cleanup options. It's worth considering giving the case a dust out. It could make a difference. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Glad its helping people out! The guide above this is alittle long-winded and needs lots of time to read. I shall write a short guide to keeping p.c's happy.
I will gather all the useful tips from this thread and hopefuly make a easy reading up-to-date guide.
The only problem is this guide is written from an XP view. I think the majority of us use XP.0 -
