Yeah off the top of my head it does install part of itself as a Windows Service. It can either defrag your drives how it's wizard defines, which I think can be at any time (when it thinks you need it but in stealth mode so only uses spare cpu) or you can actually set a schedule yourself.
The service is the only annoying part of O&O. Perfect disk is another great alternative if you don't like the way O&O installs itself.
Alternatively if you don't want to spend £30 on a defragmenter, just use the Windows one. It's not as efficient, nor as quick, but it does the job."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

I wasnt trying to get rid of ALL the temp files, just the majority. I've seen so many machines that have had over 2yrs worth of temp internet files.0 -
An excellent site with lots of information and related links on optimizing XP, i.e. making your pooter run faster, safeguarding from viruses, spyware, disabling superfluous services and general tweaking, is http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html0

Yes O&O Defrag does install a service, I use it on our all pc's, the latest build version 8 build 1341 is even better than the previous version seems to be quicker.
No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you0 -
I like O&O defrag, its very efficient and has different defrag methods.
If we are on about tune-up's i would also recommend a program called BootVis, this reviews your boot-up and customises it so its faster. Its a free program made by microsoft and you can get it here (with more details about it):

once installed goto: tools>optimize system, it will reboot your pc to then do it, so make sure you have nothing un-saved.0 -
Been trying some of these tips and thanks very much. When I untick the uncheck hide protected op sys files it advises me not to do. Is this safe?
Also when I click on start up there's only one file; kak.hta. This always starts up for some reason. When I right click to delete it nothing happens. I'm running XP and haven't yet installed SP2.
Thanks0 -

No problems......the caution message is just to let you know you will now see ALL files. It is fine to see all files as long as you dont go deleting important files.
I'm afraid to tell you that the kak.hta. is a worm. Please see link below for more info about it.

Thanks, is it ok from the update site as I haven't got the disk?
BTW, if that's a worm it doesn't show on Norton.0
