Hair disaster - can't afford the hairdressers - HELP!!

I'm not generally given to hysteria (honest) but its 4.48am and I've woken with a start and can't get back to sleep because I want to turn the clock back 2 days - anyone got "Bernards Watch"!

My hair is naturally a mousey brown/blonde but since the age of 15 its been hilighted or dyed blonde - I generally get the hilights done in a hair salon and have dyed it myself on maybe 5 occasions and only a couple have ever come out right! So at 42 you'd think I'd learn ..... oops .... think again! I'm 4 days away from a family holiday and think ooh my hair could do with a colour (its completely back to its natural colour - not dyed for almost a year) lets see. Can't afford £30 - £50 hairdressers I'll get a "box" - big mistake this is what followed;
  • nice'n easy 102 natural light ash blonde - could see it wasn't lifting left it longer to see if it would - came out pale yellow :eek:
  • blonde hi-light kit been in drawer 2 years - got dh to pull hair through :rotfl: cap and got to work - hilights came out paler yellow:eek:
SLEEP ON IT - WAKE UP YESTERDAY MORNING :eek: :eek: off to ASDA
  • got multi-tonal kit in darkest blonde (looked lovely on the box:rolleyes: ) base colour came out brownish/reddish put on hilight bit - result very uneven yellow top coat :eek:
at this point you think I'd learn ...... but no off to ASDA again
  • Excellence Nutrisse Capucinno light brown .... result my hair is now very dark burgundy (but still in suprisingly reasonable condition) :eek: :eek:
Now apart from the shock of it being so dark, it actually looks okay and if it were on someone else I would say "wow looks good what a statement - stinks of self confidence" instead I wish it were Monday again and I'd never started the whole episode.

Why am I typing this? For a number of reasons;
  • if I could correct it - has anyone got any cheap tips? :confused:
  • if you're considering a permanent colour -think hard! :cool:
  • To try and make me feel better about it! :rotfl: :rotfl:
If anyone has read this thanks, any advice warmly received.

    Sorry I cant offer much advise but I wanted to extend my sympathies - Ive been there many many times before! The only thing ive found to be of help is to ensure that any hair colour I buy is a neutral tone (looking at hair colour manufacturers helps) to ensure I dont get caught by a hairdye taking me red or green! Also, buying quite a dark neutral brown usually covers most incidents - the paler ones dont tend to help.

    There are products available that would help to remove existing colour (im not sure of brand names or anything though) and then it could be worth redoing in something darker to hide the evidence.

    Alternatively, you might be able to try a hairdressing college to get a very cheap colour.

    Ive had some interesting fashion statements in my time with hair so you are not alone!

    :j I think your hair colour sounds great! I used to rack up expensive visits to the hairdresser, but since commencing with a DMP, have grown and dyed my hair myself and saved a fortune on hairdressing bills!, In fact more people comment on how good it looks now than when I did visit the hairdresser!

    Be confident! and feel good not only about yourself but also the fact that you are saving money!!

    Enjoy your holiday.!!

    Honestly if you can't afford a GOOD hairdresser (and I assume most colleges with hairdressing schools are on holiday) and none of them advertising for models will touch it (worth a try asking though-it's certainly good training!!) then I'd leave it alone after the cocktail of stuff you've put on it as so far it hasn't gone green ;) In fact most hairdressers will probably not want to touch it until it has settled down from the chemical feast.
    Once the shock has died down you will likely get to like it -especially as going on holiday you will be around people who see the brunette confident new you rather than the usual blonde-It could be the start of a whole new you and you've already told us how striking it is.
    It honestly sounds great and I reckon it's the shock of the change-and is really not different to when we choose to have a new look-so enjoy it and who knows you may even decide blondes DON'T have more fun !! :)
    Just be careful about too much sun on your hair when you're on holiday as sunlight may change the colour a little as you've put so much stuff on it.

    Ahh bless ya!

    I fully sympathise, I am the same but not with colour.. I end up cutting my hair after I've been to the hairdressers to tidy up bits where I think they have missed and end up bodging the whole style.. I never learn too and I am 35!

    Where is your holiday, abroad? If so then I am sure once you get a tan it will look fine and get the sun on your hair, the sun will automatically lighten it anyway, so will going in and out of the pool/sea. Try squeezing lemon juice on it when you are sunbathing as they will help to lift the colour slightly.

    Hope you either get it sorted or it settles down enough for you to cope with it.

    Sounds like a fun couple of days you've had!:D But it's only hair..it'll grow out!

    Just whack on some more dramatic make up to go with the "statement" burgundy hair and enjoy the summer! I've had some hair horrors in my time too (including GREY highlights, several really dodgy perms and a crop that made me look like an extremely butch lesbian!)

    The FE colleges will be back about the time you get rooty, so you can toddle off and offer yourself as a problem for the 2nd year hairdressing students to sort out!

    Wear it with confidence and pride, tel your family/ friends that it 'reflects your mood at the moment', and leave them all guessing as to what that means!!

    I went brunette a back last year after realising how much I was spending at the salon. And I LOVE being a brunette. Our hair is shiny and you don't have to wash it as much (that sounds awful I know) as it doesn't look dirty - so you save on shampoo too.

    Wear your brown hair with confidence.

    if a colour goes too light (is that what u mean by pale yellow?) i would have bought a shaders or toners to get the right tone. They are fairly cheap to buy.

    I have done hairdressing (very long time ago)and when people used to have bleach done we used to use a toner after to get the correct shade for them.

    Anything that turns out to yellow needs another colour to netralise it. To get ash blonde was usually something with a purple/violet shade to it i think.

    enjy your holiday :) and better luck next time.
