I am sorry I am quite angry :( or should I think I have a lucky escape?

So I started with a new employer, rung up last working day to check all was ok to start supposing in modern day it pays to check there is still a job as late as possible to starting! I was very concerned at receiving a 1 liner when they tried offering me the job, that aside, as a result of this last contact was told I could start, great, I thought we could turn a corner! How wrong was I.

On pitching up I find the tables turned, (now I know why they wanted to be cagey..) the job is both not what was advertised or what I had genuinely expected of either job advert the employer actually posted, turns out I'm no Customer Service Rep as I told everyone :( but some sort of Shipping Administrator :o can't make sense of it, yep more fool me, but I can't bear to get into another argument, can barely speak so it wouldn't be worth it

I thought I could get some justice out of it and stay, least get a weeks wages at the very, very worst? and y'know not give up so easily, however instead of the 4 month probation period I am now greeted with some sort of test to pass come the end of the week, which may release the employer from any liability I get this totally and absolutely, I'll try and get up as quickly as I fall down but now find myself thinking it is worth it, going out to work. How do you trust any other employer again?
How do employers do this and get away with it, it's getting beyond me. I offered myself for a trial day in avoidance of this whole situation and got flatly refused, it was never explained that there would be a 'test' so I have actually now gotten as far as considering going to the press?

If no-body can reply to my rant, I need to let my feelings out, can it be a warning to others to be on their guard :o

Perhaps a breakdown in communication? If you're as difficult to understand in real life ... ;)

If it is the test you are concerned about, lots of companies do this - it used to see what parts of the training you are taking in and what parts you aren't. Just points to the area of the job where you need more training. Or are you saying that if you don't pass you are straight out on the street? have they actually said this or is it just what you think???

    OP
Your post is quite hard to understand, I guess that's because you wrote it when you were angry.

At your interview, did you go into depth about what your job would entail?
How much does being a 'shipping administrator' differ from being a 'Customer Service Rep'?

You say you 'can't make sense of it'?
Do you mean you don't know how to do the job?
    Did you have any training?
    One-to-one training?
    Written manual?

Do you have an employment contract?
Is there any mention of a trial period?

I would give very serious thought to your whole situation before going to 'the press'.
What would you say to the press anyway?

You think you will not pass the test and they won't pay you for a weeks work?
Would I be right in thinking English isn't your first language?
  • It's quite easy understand to, saying what OP is sense is making. Job to went while testing paid but not so trust longer no and on sign JS now of because.

    Are lot you silly being?

The OP obviously wrote this post when stressed/angry.

It is after all, the Praise, Vent & Warnings board.

Here is another very recent post from the OP:
:) Went from Senior Receptionist (in different hotels) to Conference & Events Co-ordinator also within a hotel, a massive green group one! probably helped that I'd vaguely met the boss before at another hotel we worked at, although I applied same way as everyone else and fortunately they said yes after interview, the experience on reception really helped like it was the next thing to do - I started on £12,000 back in 2007 until 2012, it was challenging along with the usual daily grind, we also had mystery calls and visits every month without fail which we had to pass and I later found that that the role I occupied wasn't so much about the selling as it might be expected today, it was more like I was in fact Banqueting Service Co-ordinator over the Sales Co-ordination part or the boss had a tight reign? with that their domain.? who knows.
It required a lot of time beyond the job attending wedding fairs, actual physical serving and laying up rooms as well as doing the paperwork, marketing at certain times of year when it came to Christmas parties, weddings and working beyond the hours for the love of it whilst remaining professional and very much in customer view. I think I enjoyed it, if you like people this is the career for you, you can normally do long service in this type of role which is why it can be rare to get into.

I was in a team of 3 in a large hotel, up the road in our sister hotels, I remember getting the impression things were done differently... so I truly think it depends a lot on the hotel setup so opinions you receive may differ, if I haven't bored you! I know newspapers and footie clubs also have Events Co-ordinators.
I can't see much wrong with that, can you?

It seems he/she is facing the very real possibility of losing a job.

Do you think it fair to poke fun?

If they are both recent then that simply means this one means even less sense. How is the job she describes above anything like a shipping coordinator?
