chinese/clone phones unlocking?

That would be my guess too - in which case it's possible that if a genuine Note4 can be unlocked, then I'd be very tempted to follow the same path with this clone. If it's EE firmware, then I would hazzard a guess that the unlocking procedure would be the same. I think the only place that this theory might start to unravel would be when the IMEI is supplied to generate the unlock code. Can't really think of any other way of doing it, apart from maybe trying to reflash with the appropriate firmware of whichever network that the phone needs to be used on. Unsure whether this would remove the original lock though?

Don't various networks use different frequency bands? maybe it doesn't have the capability to connect to other networks in the UK as it doesn't cover their bands hence no signal at all?

Another possibility is its some sort of refurb. of an original. Chinese used to do this with Nintendo DS's before they could copy the whole thing, swapping the boards into a new case with new screens and battery and a counterfeit box..
