It occurs to me that if your neighbour can't hear you knocking at the door - would she be safe in the case of a fire? Is there something like a doorbell which activates a light, or something?

Im so glad we live in a detached house! God help anyone listening to my OH playing classical music full pelt!

I do fear not being able to hear, though. I have a hearing loss, clarity rather than volume, and macular degeneration seems to run in the family.

I sympathise with you and your neighbour, lance.

Yes, there is, and also the local fire brigade may come out and fit flashing / vibrating fire alarms.

If the OP's neighbour is willing, then the council's Sensory Needs Team within Social Services is probably the place to start.
