OP, Best to apply for one of the online Savings Account such as Principality. They will do ID and CIFAS check immediately. If it goes through fine then u should be ok. If they ask you to provide ID then might be a problem. This is not 100% as ID check can fail for number of other reasons but from my previous experience its good indication.

What would be the point, if he's having all his banking facilities withdrawn then he won't be able to open new accounts.

OP was worried about CIFAS. So that's why I said to apply for Savings account online. If it goes through then no CIFAS registered. Natwest is not the only bank in the UK. As long he has no CIFAS he can apply for other bank accounts.

But if it fails, is it because of CIFAS, or because NatWest have effectively banned him from having accounts with them?

Making an application tells him nothing and is a waste of time.

    Principality was suggested, not Natwest.

Thank you all for your replies!

I've had another thought (and obvs will check with Natwest tomorrow). I've got a salary due to be paid in on the 27th April and have set up a standing order to send that straight to my Lloyds account. Will the standing order work? I've used my account a couple of times this past week (including transferring money to my Lloyds account but this wasn't a standing order) and it has all worked fine.

Doesn't sound like they've blocked the account. If there's no block then you can continue using it as normal until it's closed.

Lloyds/Halifax on the other hand blocked all my friend's accounts when they decided to issue a 60 day closure notice which made them unusable in the meantime.
  • Hello BLASPHEMOUSRUMOURS,

I was wondering, what was the outcome of your NatWest and CIFAS SAR situation was?

    Thanks.
