I adore Lisbon. It’s a beautiful city with good weather and great food. It’s not as touristy as other major cities in Western Europe, and since Portugal isn’t a wealthy country, some of the neighbourhoods look slightly run-down and unkempt. I think it adds to the unique charm of the place, but it’s not for everyone.

Barcelona has it all – the beach, great food, culture, night-life, sightseeing, etc. I also love tapas restaurants for solo dining as you can sit at the bar. Downsides are that pick-pocketing is rife and the city gets very crowded in the summer months.

Berlin would be my pick. It’s a modern and energetic city, particularly in the summer, when there are a lot of outdoor activities going on. English is widely spoken, public transportation is excellent, and I never felt awkward dining alone. You won’t run out of things to do as there’s something for everyone.

I did a short break in Prague as a solo female, I really enjoyed it, in a way it felt weird as most of my solo travels have been all in beach holidays, this was the 1st fend for myself, I enjoyed it. x

Where in Italy? Have been on many solo trips there particularly to Bologna without a problem. I also suggest Berlin.

Pisa, Naples, Rome, Florence - didn't really like being in any of them. Slightly better in the far north where the people seem to have more in common with their neighbours over the border than they do with people further south. I wouldn't say any of it was a problem, just that the experience was less pleasant than in most other places I've been so I have no desire to return.

I agree with Berlin as a good destination (and Copenhagen as mentioned earlier).

Main thing I'd disagree with -Pisa-passed through it on the train many times-couldn't be bothered to visit as its too small. I find Italians to be charming and warm though. If you don't like Florence though, you need your head testing.

Well, I disliked Florence more than anywhere, one big tourist trap and far too many people to have any chance to properly appreciate the art that I went to see - if that means I'm off my rocker, well so be it .

I think it depends when you go. My first time I went for the day, far too hot and spent all my time just waiting for the next (expensive) drink.

Next time I went in the autumn and stayed there for 4/5 days, booked Uffisi in advance etc. It was great. We had time for an excursion to San Gimginano and really enjoyed restaurants in the evenings when many day trippers had left.

That being said, I do like Verona and the places reachable from there (Vicenze, Lake Garda, Venice etc.)

I find the big tourist destinations in Italy (e.g. Florence) can get a bit unbearable.

I love the quieter parts though, especially if you can avoid the peak holiday season of July/August. Puglia is an amazing region, Sardinia is lovely, and I'm told that Sicily is too, although I haven't been there. The Amalfi coast is not so quiet, but still lovely. Naples is worth a visit, if only to grab a pizza.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

The birthplace of the Renaissance , open air museums , I dont do the touristy thing and if you are talking about the uffizi , yes, it's world famous. I've been to Florence many times, never found it a tourist trap.

Well, as I've never been to Italy with you I can hardly have been talking about your experience can I, I was talking about mine, and my view is as valid as yours.

Perhaps you you could list the tourist traps? I have no idea what or where these places are?
