Engagement Ring - How Much To Spend?

It wasn't meant to come out that way... no one knows me anyway and who cares?
Of course I could have deleted it if it had caused offence but since you've quoted me i'll leave it. It didn't cause offence to hubby who was standing behind me when I typed it so up yours!:)
Obviously it was. Obviously older people earn more, but the month x salary (rubbish) isn't designed for older people.0 -

Just another way to say how much your husband earns.Buzzybee90 wrote: »Obviously it was. Obviously older people earn more, but the month x salary (rubbish) isn't designed for older people.
Harsh. I was about to say a similar thing to Judi. My husband could have bought me a ring worth several thousands of pounds, but he had the sense to know it would A, be wasted on me and B, the money could be spent on much more important things. I think I would have cried if he had of.
It isn't about showing off or stating how much someone earns, it's about making a point. That just because someone can afford to spend a lot doesn't mean that they should just because of a silly "rule" dreamed up by a jewellers.
Btw who do you think is the rule designed for? Guilable people of ALL ages is my answer.0 -
I'd never be able to relax with a ring worth thousands on my finger. I've seen a nice ring I like on Etsy, my kind of style and under £300
as if OH would ever propose :rotfl:
The "so many months salary rule" was an advertising campaign, along with the idea that the ring should have a diamond in it. I'm not a fan of diamonds either, I'd rather have a pretty emerald or sapphire. Really it depends on what you think your girlfriend would like!
If £1k-£2k is affordable to you, then that's fair enough. Don't bankrupt yourself over some nice metal and carbonand good luck!

We didn't bother with engagement rings and when it came to picking a wedding ring I went to a second-hand jeweller and picked a £27 ring with 3 sapphires (2 actually, one is plastic but you can't tell!) and little leaves. The jeweller was astonished and said my husband was very lucky, but I see the value of a wedding ring in the memories it brings back and in the message it evokes when you look at it. I've never understood the desire for an expensive little rock.
I hope your partner is pleased with the ring you choose OP (and that she says yes)

Some people are just plain rude (not referring to you by the way).
And should think before their brain and their typing fingers engage at the same time.0 -

I thought you put me on ignore?0 -
I've looked at rings and seen some I liked at £100-200, all the way up to £4000-5000. For me though it was the settings that I am drawn to.
What about buying the diamond (or other stone) and proposing with that, then going out to choose/design the setting together?0 -

Coloured stones are making a come back, especially Sapphires. Apparently it's due to the "Kate effect" because of Kate Middleton.
My Mam's engagement ring is a sapphire surrounded by diamonds, it's beautiful!0 -
I spent £180 on my fianc!es engagement ring.
Her wedding ring cost about £150 (white gold) and mine about £80 (silver).
Which according to my friend I was being tight as he saved up 6 months of his salary. Which boggles my mind as spending thousands on rings doesn't automatically create some magical, stress-free marriage. Beside my fianc!e would have killed me if I spend obscene amounts on a lump of material.
Argos do engagement rings for £69.99 and wedding rings for £5.99, which as a ring (essentially a lump of material to sit on the finger) works equally as well as a £9999.99 ring.0
