  • Does she wear a lot of jewellery? I'd be worried with something that cost more than maybe £100 tops, as I'd be scared all the time I'd lose it as I'm not a jewellery person.

I was thinking about picking one together, but I would like the proposal to use the real ring - I know it sounds silly! Plus I think she would prefer it if I was to choose.

That seems strange, surely if you are picking an engagement ring together then you are already engaged!

£9K seems a ridiculous amount to spend, even £900 is a lot of money.:o
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

What are you opinions on how much should be spend? What do you think about the 3 months salary "rule"?

It was a marketing ploy brought in by De Beers to increase the sale of diamonds, and it worked. Lots of guilable people buying into it, believing that is what you have to do because 'thems the rules'

If people have the money and want to spend that much on a ring then that's ok, but don't feel that you have to follow suit, those rules are outdated nowadays anyhow.

Personally I don't wear jewellery and would feel extremely uncomfortable wearing a ring worth thousands incase I lost it or damaged it. Not only that, I'd much rather the money was spent on more worthwhile things.

I think lots of couples will pick a ring together to make sure the person getting the ring is happy with it.

Personally feel 9k on an engagement ring is ridiculous especially when you already state you don't have much left at the end of the month.

Unless she is a total snob you can get a gorgeous ring for lots less. I personally wouldn't have wished my hubby to spend more than £500 as I wear mine all the time and wouldn't want to worried about losing it. I'm not sure how much mine cost but I love it.

I would put the rest towards the wedding as they can soon mount up in price.

Hi OP- if you're insistant on choosing it yourself you will NEED to know her size. Ring sizes are very precise. It's not something that can be guessed.

I'm glad I didn't let my wife choose her ring. I think I may have ended up spending a whole lot more than I did.

As has already been pointed out the three months salary "rule" was/is a marketing ploy by De Beers to make more money out of the gullible.

Spend what you can afford and/or are happy paying.

You will need to know her size though. I can't remember how I did it but it did take me several weeks so as not to arouse suspicion. Women tend to pick up on any kind of odd behaviour and, more often than not, jump to the wrong conclusion, so you need to be very careful.

Spend less than £6k and your lack of love will shine through.

Really hope that was tongue in cheek!

OP, surely you know your gf and if she would go barmy if you spent daft money, then don't spent daft money!:rotfl:

Unless she has a hankering for a certain stone, then go for a solitaire diamond-the value of the ring doesn't matter, it's the commitment that counts!

    Best of luck
