Engagement Ring - How Much To Spend?

Alot of places quote 1-3 months salary.
I earn around 3K per month, so the above would mount up to a 9K, but I pay all the bills/mortgage as she doesnt work. So there is not much left over at the end of each month.
I also think she would go nuts spending 9K on a ring, when we could use this money for moving house/the wedding.
What are you opinions on how much should be spend? What do you think about the 3 months salary "rule"?
I was thinking of spending 1K-2K, am I being a cheapskate - I dont mind spending 9K, but I think the money could be better used elsewhere, and I think she would also say the same.
p.s Im not a newbie - just hiding my identity as she reads this site!

I think rules are for breaking tbh. One of my favourite rings was ridiculously cheap, if you like a cheaper ring, buy it. I mean if you both like a cheaper ring. The cost isnt important as far as Im concerned, the meaning behind it is.0

It's all relative really. Why don't you ask your partner to choose one? You don't want to spend up to 9k on one that doesn't fit or she doesn't like.0

Im going to keep it a suprise, and some online retails that I have been recommended (blue nile) let you return in 30 days if the ring is not to her taste.0 -
I have seen my dream engagement ring. It's £20. If my partner ever got it for me I would be in heaven. Not only cos he asked me to marry him, but because of the thought that went into the ring. It doesn't matter what you spend its the thought and love and sentiment behind it.0

the cost of the ring should not matter, it is the meaning, if you spend a fortune you then have the worry of it being lost or stolen.
Buy a nice ring for a fraction of the price and use the money saved on your new home.0 -
Is there a rule?
Never heard that before.
As you earn a reasonable salary I think you'd just buy the ring that she chooses.Early retired - 18th December 2014

In the old days it was I believe traditional for the man to spend one months salary on the ring.0 -
Nothing. I was offered but declined an engagement ring. I said I might consider an eternity ring later on. Never really saw the point of an engagement ring.0

Does she like that sort of surprise?
A lot of women prefer to choose their own ring, as they are the ones who are going to wear itEarly retired - 18th December 2014

How will you know her size? It's not something you can guess.
Also she may say she likes the ring when she would have picked something else..... She has to wear it for the rest of her life after all.
Who don't you buy a "dummy" ring to propose with, then choose one together?0
