    Of course there are others.

You can get 6 months of contributory JSA and 12 months of contributory ESA.
Why then should the State Pension pay out for life?

That's because JSA and ESA is for working age people who can always get a job before their Contribution based benefits runs out.

Pensioners are at the end of their working life (unless like my Dad they choose to keep on working)

Nice idea. I've just been medically retired due to health condition. My condition is unlikely to improve so the idea of getting another job is but a dream. Believe me I'd love too. Thankfully I get a good ill health pension through work so my ESA is almost nothing but does pay my NI for me.

Is it illegal to stash a bit of money away under the mattress ?
and with interest rates as they are - perhaps a good move ....

No it's not illegal. But if you were claiming any form of public assistance that required you to disclose your total wealth and didn't, that is illegal!

Plus if you attempt to put that 'spare money' in a bank account, you would have to prove where it came from - the bank simply wouldn't touch it and a note would be made by the bank of a suspected offence under the Money Laundering regulations.

There will always be winners and losers when it comes to Welfare Reform. If you lose £100 I am sure that you will find a way of making up that loss.

Much like the millions that said that they were too ill to work and those that could just never find the job that suited them - they are now in work albeit because they were forced to by the government.

I'll loose £139 just on my dla.

I won't lose anything!! I don't claim for anything. Could if I wanted, but don't want to.

It should absolutely be means tested. No problem with low incomes getting the help but people who are financially ok should not get it. Hope it passes and all the money given to those on higher incomes can be better spent elsewhere. I've always felt the same way about child benefit too. Don't believe anyone should get it. People choose to have children poor and rich alike. Why is anyone paid for the pleasure?
