I totally agree with "Lord Gardener", go for Foxit Reader.
Adobe Reader 8.1 is bloatware. Quite why does a relatively simple program like a PDF Reader need to occupy over 150MB of hard disc space? Its extremely bloated so steer well clear.
Foxit does 99% of what Adobe Reader does, without the bloat and its free too.Lack of money is the root of all evil.

Foxit is far better than Adobe - as well as being standalone (you don't even actually install it, just download & run it from wherever you want (it's only 2.5Mb)), it also has a basic editing feature, called 'typewriter', that lets you add notes to pdf files. After first use you get the option to always use it for opening pdf files which it does in a fraction of the time needed by Adobe. Also integrates with your web bowser.0

Another great feature from Foxit is that you can fill out PDF forms (I used to use Adobe 7 - don't know if you could do this in Adobe 8 - didn't want to install that massive download that takes ages to start, gives you annoying update messages etc etc)
I can't think of a single advantage of using Adobe!
Edit: oh yes, and the acrord32 process from adobe used to not shut down meaning if I read a pdf I couldn't shut down without terminating the process!0 -
I definitely concur on foxit"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."
