Atlantis The Palm, Disaster Averted

So we have finally reached our final destination, Dubai. I managed to get a very good deal for Atlantis last year through Destinology....anywhoo
Today we arrive, all goes well until we get to the room......it's got damp carpet and smells of dampness, we had to rush out so couldn't sort it out immediately.
We return and I decide there is just NO WAY IN HELL I'm going to stay in this room for 4 nights. I politely inform Guest Services and at first they say we can give you room spray, which I irritably inform them won't fix the problem of wetness and damp smell!
They agree to send housekeeping up, and send a sweet guy who doesn't speak a word of english! Give me strength! I opt for the "kill them with kindness" routine and I ask (sign language) him to take off his socks to feel the dampness to which he obliges and agrees, even though he smelt the dampness upon entry anyway.
Very long story short, Management came up, after a few minutes of back and forth and me smiling and being extra nice they offered me a bigger room with balcony and threw in a few sweet treats!
This is how you take care of your customers! I wish other companies could take a leaf out of their book!
I will post in Praise & Vent section too.

It sounds poor to me. A decent company would have sorted another room without questioning your judgement. You shouldn't have to argue your point.
My wife went to the US a month ago. Hyatt hotel, but the room was above a bar and function room. It was noisy. She went to reception who gave her another room and sent someone to move all her luggage.0 -

Agree, I would expect any Decent hotel would be in there straight away to look at the fault and get it fixed, not ask you if you mind doing something like tolerating it when you are on holiday and have paid for the service.
Must say Dubai service in most hotels is very good but its getting worse now and I have had issues last time I went and stayed at the Ocean View Hotel (never staying there again)Blessed on 18th February 2014 at 0814 with little Sarah xxx0 -
I think I have to agree with you both.
This morning they've managed to !!!! up our breakfast, in room dining. Siiiggghhhhh0 -
Why did you ask him to take off his socks? Were his feet the only parts of his body that can detect moisture!?0

Hahahahaha listen I was struggling with my sign language!0

I would expect even the most average of hotels to do this. When staying in a five star luxury resort like Atlantis, I would have expected them to move you to a different room immediately, no questions asked.
Having said that, how are you finding it there? On our trip to Dubai we considered there but plumped for the Westin in the end.
We did take a trip out to Atlantis and we found it all a bit, er, strange and isolated, even by Dubai's standards. Not my cup of tea as hotels go, but I'm intrigued what it's like to stay there.0 -
I'm going to sound like an utter snob, but I HATE it....it's like the Butlins of the East (I've never been to Butlins), I would never recommend the Atlantis even if they were paying me to recommend it. Also they let themselves down with a lot of small little things that annoy me.
I prefer quieter hotels where parents don't allow their children to use the corridors as a play ground (I note this can happen at any hotel), the "Do Not Disturb" sign means just that, do not disturb me by calling me to tell me that someone's at my door with complimentary fruit, or to ask if housekeeping can come in?!?!?
Dubai isn't a city one comes to for the beach, it all feels rather fake/plasticky, next time I'm staying in a city hotel and will just use the pool! Dubai is my destination of choice for shopping, for anything else, I'm still waiting for it to show me!0 -

I had kids running down the corridors at 10.30pm 2 nights ago in the Travelodge - the only night of the 4 night stay it happened.
The do not disturb sign meant exactly that - no one knocked on my door asking to clean. They probably turned up with a complementary apple core, but saw the DnD sign and walked away.
If you go to Butlins, expect Butlins. The Atlantis was so desirable to you in your original post in the same was it was desirable to all the others who stayed there. TBH, the richer I've seen people, the more rampent I've seen their kids.
Sorry you aren't enjoying your hotel - we all get that experience at times - but feel sad for you as this is the part which will stick with you.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
