I think recruitment agencies should be obliged to pay for the travel of the candidate they wish to see face to face. Either that or the recruiter should go to meet the candidate.

I remember when I was unemployed I spent around £400 on travel to and from recruitment consultants. 99% never got back to me after the initial sign up or tried to place me into dead end temp jobs I had no interest in.

I am currently looking for a new role but because I am still employed I am being a lot more picky with the recruitment agencies I am signing up with and in most cases am insisting they come to meet me near where I work if they are so keen to get me to sign up.

Not my fault If you can't do a basic google search. Plenty of free trials and even free usage on some new accounts. Is this enough for you?

You would still have to find the time to interview some of these clowns they are likely to put your way.

Still let the recruitment consultants do the business for you eh, as they always know best;)

These are just applicant tracking systems?? If you buy one or use one online it will be empty until you fill them with candidates...

You'll need to spend tens of thousands to build a complete list of candidates, then you'll need to call them all...

Then all of a sudden YOU ARE the a recruiter!

I worked in IT recruitment a while ago and it was the most soul destroying job I'd ever had, we never met candidates, and only talked to them over a phone to prepare for interview IF a company had already accepted them for an interview based on their CV. It was a case of sending out as many CVs as possible in the hope of a company showing interest... oh and as for the "jobs" we were told to make up as many as possible and then when people sent their CVs in/registered, to call all the companies on that CV and ask if they were looking, or if we could help them in the future.

I left quite quickly when I was told to persuade someone to accept a job offer I knew was wrong for them and that they would hate!

All that said, I did a lot of temp work through agencies at Uni and loved it.

Sounds like you did have a bad experience. Not all agencies are like that though. When it comes to stripping companies from CV's, of course EVERY recruiter does this, it's just a smart thing to do.

Low and behold I went on 2 recruitment appointsments today. Both of them I was there for no more than 10 minutes...

The first one called me last week telling me about an insurance broker role they had. I go to see him and his manager tells me about a 'foreign exchange/fx broker' based role... I said im not interested in that only Insurance based...

Goes ahead and says do I know any people etc etc...

    /

2nd recruiter this was for a couple jobs they had posted which I applied to. I go there and long story short she says to me 'we dont have anything on our books just yet' etc etc...

I WAS SO ANGRY WITH BOTH OF THEM.

    Complete waste of time.

This is why I would never visit an agency.

Yet there are people on here extolling the virtues of a face to face chat.

But of course, the agency that asked you in are one of the few to waste your time aren't they, as most would have you believe your [STRIKE]ordeal[/STRIKE] experience is rare, and would still recommend you go and visit them, suffering loss, time and time again.

My experience with all recruitment agencies is nearly always exactly the same. That is:

I see a job online. Decent pay. No experience necessary. Easy to get too with public transport.

I apply. They tell me to come in and register. After I have signed all of their paperwork, they tell me that that particular job is no longer available.
(Yet they carry on advertsing that same job indefinitely)

They call me up at extremely short notice and ask me if I can do X job which is too far away and isn't close to the criteria that we discussed. I say 'no' and they are clearly annoyed with me.

Eventually they call me about a job which sounds like what we discussed.
I start working there, and it is NOTHING like what I have been told. They have just lied to me.
I struggle and am therefore 'let go' by the client (not surprising as I was put forward for a job that I can't do) and that is usually about the end of my relationship with the agency.

Irrelevant, but to me, 'decent money' is anything above minimum wage.

I am a contractor and all my contracts are via agencies as in my field nobody really advertises directly.

Agencies pretty much hoarding CVs is quite normal - so they have candidates ready for when there is a vacancy they are asked to fill.

Personally I have no issue with that and I am registered with probably 50 agencies (read; they have my CV and know my requirements) but i have only visited ONE in person. All other contact with the rest is/was/will be by phone/email only.

I guess all depends on what kind of work are you looking for/are qualified for.

The common assumption people make is that agencies are there to find them a job. Nope. Agencies are there to fill a vacancy registered by employer, it is employer that pays their fees so they work for them, not for the job seeker.

I personally have an issue with a potential employer/client registering the same vacancy with several agencies - complete nonsense as recently had 6 agencies calling me about the same job. Total waste of time.

I have no need o meet agency recruiter in person. My CV/skills/experience/references/job history are a very good indication of what I can/will do and for how much (I am on a daily rate) - having to meet anyone in person would make absolutely no sense..
