Have you tried gluten free baking powder and Bicarbonate of soda? Asda and Sainsburys stock it.

Neither baking powder or bicarbonate of soda contain gluten anyway  Gluten's a protein found in flour.

Supercook baking powder lists wheat flour an ingredient. Probably to stop it clumping like bicarb does.

You can't use baking soda when a recipe calls for baking powder. Baking soda by itself lacks the acidity to make a cake rise. However, you can make your own baking powder if you have baking soda and cream of tartar. Simply mix two parts cream of tartar with one part baking soda. :)

In my experience bicarb of soda will make a cake rise beautifully :)

It will taste horrible though :(

My brownie recipe calls for plain flour and baking powder. I usually just use SR flour and they turn out fine :D

As this has fallen from the front page of OS I'll add it to the exisitng thread.

Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to tell bicarb and baking powder apart? I would like to make some chewy cookies and it says to add bicarb, but both our bicarb and baking powder have lost their lables and to me both are just white powder!

If they are the Dr Oetker/Supercook ones the Bicarb has a blue lid and the baking powder has a red lid. I have just had a look in the cupboard! HTH.

Bicarb will fizz if you add an acid to it-vinegar or lemon juice.

They do actually feel different. Baking powder is much more flour like in texture whereas bicarb has a fine crystalline texture and forms clumps more readily but the acid test is a more reliable way to distinguish them.
