Should my housemate pay for the dress she borrowed then ruined?

Have you told her?
What was her reaction?
A decent person would offer recompense!!0 -
She should at least have asked, but as just a housemate you have to choose between making your life uncomfortable and having the current value of a dress you may not wear again. I wouldn't have her as a friend after you part company with her. Thoughtless people are a pain.0

It's no good asking for more info - it's another of those "Made up by MSE" posts. It didn't actually happen.
Frankly if any of the MSE staff are flatsharing with someone who borrowed something of theirs and damaged it - and acted like it never happened - then perhaps they need to be on the property boards seeking advice about moving !I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
I think the consensus (sp??) is that if you borrow something and damage it then you should replace it. However, you should probably check with the lender first to see what compensation they would like ... read Maupassant's short story "The Necklace" to find out why! (Google it, it's available to read online.)0

This housemate clearly has no respect for other peoples belongings as any half decent person would have offered to replace the dress, even incisting on giving you an agreeable amount of cash.As she hasn't offered you should ask and don't worry about an "awkward"situation as your not the one in the wrong and i'm sure you'll find others who agree. If we borrowed something and it got damaged for whatever reason our automatic reaction is to replace the item,no questions.0

How did you find out about it? Have you just discovered it and she's not aware or did she hide the fact and say nothing?
Did she wash it on an incorrect temperature in the washing machine?
Obviously she should apologise.
How much was the dress? How old is it?
Need more info before I can give a better answer!0
