I think that is the best option, and so far that is my plan, but I don't think I'm allowed to put a lock on the door so I'll have to put up with her entering my room at will and screaming at me :(

It's not permanent and does no damage to the door. I've used one before when a housemate used to climb into the wrong bed when drunk...

I would hate to think LL could enter my room whilst I was there!

Would you consider this lock as a solution for your final few weeks there? it's £35 but no drilling or anything is needed to be secure in your room. And you can bring it with you to your next place!

There may be other less expensive varieties out there too. Go Google!

Best of luck, and I hope you will be much happier in your new abode.

4 pints of milk tipped into the carpet in various spots will work well, as well as fish in the sofa etc.

Seriously just accept she is mad cut you loss and run. Superglue the lock on the way out.
  • You say that the deposit was to be used in lieu of notice you had given or were you given notice by your landlady last month. Presumably this was agreed between you at the time.

So why are you still in the flat and why have you paid another month's rent?

She's renting privately off a guy that I've never met. He has given her permission to let out one of the rooms since she lives alone in a 2 bed flat.

And claiming single persons council tax rebate no doubt. As a law abiding citizen you will want to let the council know you are living in the property as well as her.

I would save all these nice surprises for the day you move out.

Things like prawns in the curtain poles, yoghurt on wall behind fridge, taking batteries out of remote controls, switching TV language to Chinese, setting kitchen radio alarms to 4:30am.

That way you can get your revenge and not have to face an uncomfortable three weeks with her.

buy a door wedge normally used for holding a door open and place it under the door when closed and you are in the room.

Or just get some old wood and start drilling in your room.
Then when she comes in, stop drilling, look at her and rev the drill once while smiling :)

You can say you're "practising drilling".

Do you have any contact details for this guy? I would have pressed the re-dial button when she left and see what he has to say about Mrs Unhinged.

I would look into whether this is legal or not too and if not stir up some trouble after you leave. Flat leases do have clauses against renting let alone sub letting.

Shelter is your best bet, they can advise.

I have to admit I am on the side of winding her up but I would do it just as I am leaving that way she can't go all crazy on you :T
  • I had a very similar experience a few years ago. The lease holder appeared normal when I first moved in but started behaving in a very possessive and odd way. Passing loud comments as to who has left the light on. At first I thought it was funny and could not take anything seriously.

I came to the conclusion that the individual was an absolute control freak that had some very deep seated problems. They started trying to control my behaviours and routines and started believing that we were in some sort of relationship. Which we were not.

I ignored a lot of this as I had just started a new job - This was in London in the early 90`s. I was working really long days so did not really spend a lot of time there. It got to the stage where my things were being moved and used. I put this down to my own absent minded way.

Things changed when I was off work ill and asleep when I heard my landlady chatting on the phone. It freaked me out as she really was wired to the moon. Chatting on about what we would be doing for our next holiday. I had a wide awake moment when she talked about me by name.

Without going in to specifics she was as mad as a hatter. I organised a move as soon as possible. When I told her I was moving she went totally mad and said how could I break up with her like this. I did not leave a forwarding address but did get lots of phone calls to come and collect my mail. This was a total fabrication as I never registered any of my details there.

I don't know what happened to her but it was a scary experience thinking about it.

    Never again.
