    They'll estimate your usage

Edit: You might want to let your solicitor know too, so that he can alert the vendor (probably via their solicitor) that an additional bill will be on the way to them by the supplier for estimated usage, as it's unlikely the meter stopped on completion day.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about that!

I moved into my flat 18/02/15, I took a video of the meter reading (dark cupboard so video was easiest). Took another video yesterday. Just went to compare the 2 readings and they are EXACTLY the same.

Hopefully if I show them previous bills they can estimate from that,

    Sounds like a plan.

Fundamentally flawed, but a plan all the same.

It's the one marked up as being for my flat, though no bill to check for certain, they emailed to ask for a reading but I can't get into my account as the site seems to be down so can't check for certain

That is no guarantee at all, meters are frequently labelled wrongly in communal set ups. Compare the serial nos. on meter and bill, and switch off the supply at or near the meter and see if you still have power to your flat.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

As above, check the serial numbers and power to flat to ensure this meter is correctly linked to your property.

Chances are the supplier will have to estimate on consumption after a replacement meter is fitted, given there is no use before hand. They may ask you to call in about 2-3 weeks after the exchange for a reading, then work backwards using an average advance per day to generate a new opening read.

Bit of a hassle this, surprised it wasn't picked up before you moved in.
  • If its a Sangamo Weston analog meter they can stick. They show a blank space on the last digit ( not the tenths ). To restart give it a good thump on the side. A simple kettle on and off test will show if your meter is really one of the other three. Macman is correct, you can t be sure that its your meter from a plot/flat number

As this would be my first bill for this property, hence only just finding the issue with the meter, I mean previous bills as in from previous properties

I have actually had this in a previous flat I rented, stupidly took it for granted as the woman who lived here before was the owner and here for 5 years, I thought she might have noticed.

Still can't get into my account to look at the details so will call up tomorrow and see if they can give me the meter number so I can check

It says ace1000 smo at the top, I found a meter mix up in a rented property but stupidly assumed previous owner would have noticed here, really should have known better. Having the plot number and flat number written all over it lulled me into a false sense of security. I will turn EVERYTHING off tomorrow before I go down with a torch and check the other meters down there before I call up

Thats a meter I dont see in my neck of the woods. It may respond to the old hard thump on the side to un stick it but first try the kettle test, pref with someone to switch it on when you re down in meter cupboard. The red light will flash quite fast( if it has one ) when 2500 watts are used from a kettle so should be easy to see which is yours.
The other fault I have found like this in the past is when new occupiers have moved in and their electric meter has a bypass link under the lower cover. When there s a link in place the red light will be solid, non flashing all the time regardless of usage and the index will not advance. Some occupiers are that stupid they vacate leaving the meter bypassed, or have even paid someone to do it and have no idea how to remove it.
