Feeling tired before midnight isn't a good sign (I got up at about 10 this morning).

I've got a lot to do tomorrow, so I'm going to bed in a minute :)

    Goodnight NP

When I came to London I met people who'd lived in Hull where they had cream phone booths (while the rest of us had red ones).

It was one of the last 6 telephone exchanges in the UK. Which included large ones like Glasgow. Most were eventually absorbed into the BT borg cube.

I was in Hull in the '80s.

Kingston Telecomms was well respected; their training standards were very good.

Hullites could spend hours on the phone when making a local call for 10p. That definitely wasn't the case for those people stuck with BT.

...Whether you'd want to spend hours talking with someone from Hull on the phone is a different matter. It would be easier to talk down a drain pipe with someone with a heavy cold who had forgotten the 'oh' sound.

Uni open day went well yesterday, youngest came away even more determined to get things right with his prep for interviews, portfolio and results needed to reach his end goal.

One thing I can say for youngest is that when he sets his mind to something, he generally achieves a result, he becomes focused and puts his all into it. Much like last year, he needed to take more level 2 qualifications while he resat his Maths as he was below the required GCSEs for his college (once he got his maths, he then had the required amount and the extra 2 he took on were additional to requirements for level 3 study), he took a course he wasn't particularly interested in but it was the best of the choices he had.

He ended up being the top student in the subject and his tutors couldn't quite get their heads around the fact that he wasn't going onto level 3 in that subject, to them, it was a given as he had appeared to be so enthusiastic, always had his coursework in on time, did the fullest job of his coursework and never just enough to get by like some others.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

That the people of 'Ull voted for Mr Prescott as MP tells you all you need to know about the place.

Apparently the Chinese there sells the cheapest good vintage champagne in the UK.

    ...

    Hull factoids :)

A history of moderate inbreeding led to an impotence problem there, affecting as many as 1 in 8 males. The sperm bank opposite the Uni did a roaring trade back then.

There were over a 1,000 A Capella groups in Hull when the House Martins emerged. I have no idea why it was so popular.

Britains cheapest nightclub was in Hull in the '80s. When you visited it you realised why :)

Hull people were the best savers in the country, despite the low income levels. They used to look across at their Yorkshire cousins, aghast at their extravagance.

Matt Berry's best joke on the IT Crowd was about visiting Paris...a restaurant in Hull.

    I may give the impression I dislike Hull, but I don't :)

I'm rather impressed by Prescott. Somehow, despite the infighting between Blair and Brown, he survived unscathed for years and years. Not bad for a local boy, made good.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

He was the token working class leftie in the right wing cabinet. They even invented a job for him.

He was left in charge of the country when the big boys went off on their hols.

They all used to come back if something important happened!

Gotta be honest, I have nothing for or against Hull. I have a very lovely friend from that part of the world (she lost the accent:j). I've never been there and would jump at the chance to go some time. It's one of those places that just means nothing to me.

It's on the list of places to go when I do my Grand Tour of Northern Hell Holes though. I want to run the gamut of the grim from Wigan to Barrow-in-Furness.
