We have a very quiet house, DD1 has never been away before but has been on her 4 night school trip since Monday and there seems to be no provision for parent contact. I am sure she is fine but it is the first time for her she has not been put to bed and woken up by her parents so 4 days is going to be quite a change.
DD is on hers this week too. But then she's done a weekend with Brownies, a weekend with Winston's Wish, and a Mon-Thurs Brownie thing too.phoebe1989seb wrote: »Later he went on several overseas tours with the choir as well as school trips to Russia and China and on the latter ones (when he was 15/16) he would text to say he'd arrived safely, but he definitely didn't miss home......a far cry from my German and French exchange trips, when I recall being extremely homesick, lol :rotfl:
I think exchange trips are MUCH more homesick-ful than choir tours and school trips. You are all on your own in a strange family, instead of being among all your friends.I bet you wear a seat belt, avoid speeding and don't tailgate because there will be a direct financial consequence to you.
Another chocolate bar? Meh.
I wear my seatbelt and don't tailgate because I want to stay alive and not kill anybody else. I don't speed partly because I want to stay alive and not kill anybody, but also because I feel that if anything dreadful were to happen, I would feel even worse about it if I had been speeding than if I hadn't. I change my tyres more frequently than I am legally obliged to because I want to stay alive and avoid killing anybody, despite the extra expense.
Money doesn't come into it for me. YMMV.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Gosh, busy day today, our 44th Wedding Anniversary. 44 years ago today it was blowing a Force 8 gale and p*ssing down in West Kirby (Wirral) and the most frequently appearing chap in our wedding photos was the guy who drove the wedding car and consequently held a huge umbrella over folks walking from car to church. <rolls eyes>
This morning we plucked a bunch of roses and a single ornamental allium flower and added some rosemary for greenery, made a small bouquet and took it to MiL in nursing home. She was having lunch when we arrived, so OH took over from the nurse/care assistant and fed her. After an hour or so we shared a program I'd downloaded about Llyn Peninsula, including some stuff about Bardsey Island and Abersoch. (I bought the Huddle for just this kind of stuff) After that she was falling asleep so we bid our farewells and left.
Home, where we sat out for a short while in the front garden before heading to the lottie with a bottle of Prosecco  and some nibbles. OH did some grass shearing behind the shed while I weeded the herb patch in a vain attempt to find the French tarragon we planted last year - obviously didn't survive the winter.
Then we took a break to share the Prosecco with some of our fellow allotmenteers. I was pretty shattered after that, so OH watered the shallots, onions, garlic and spicy salad mix before we packed up and returned home.
It was such a gorgeous evening, even though bed was calling, I decided it would be nice to sit out a bit longer in the sun and enjoy the flowers in our front garden. Plus OH hadn't had any of the Prosecco at lottie (alcohol free lager instead) cos of driving, so we opened another bottle... Suddenly there was a blur by the valarian hanging over the front path - a hummingbird hawk moth! :j
 :j Magical to see it!
Finally in bed now as badly needed to get my feet up. When I start to fade often get something of a second wind when can get my legs horizontal.
OH gone back downstairs to do Facebook while I watch the gruesome program on teeth! :rotfl:
Am convinced that's how we get by with each other - spend time apart as well as together! :rotfl:0 -

Congratulations Maggie and Mr Maggie. A real achievement and it sounds as though you've had a lovely day. :beer:vivatifosi wrote: »Hopefully Places like Cuffley Camp and Phasels Wood and the newer one in Lee Valley are well set up for children her age. They are also something of a rite of passage for Herts school children. My brother and I went when we were about 10 and my nephews have been more recently.
They are very safe and enclosed environments where kids get to explore. I'm sure she'll be fine and they are well.versed in dealing with any home sickness.
I remember Cuffley Camp, over 30 years ago! That's brought back memories, viva:cool:I think exchange trips are MUCH more homesick-ful than choir tours and school trips. You are all on your own in a strange family, instead of being among all your friends.
I agree - not just a strange family but often a strange language. We did French exchanges in our 2nd or 3rd year senior (top set French did O Level at the end of the 3rd year) and I think we were just too young emotionally, no matter how kind the host family was.
Thinking of you and your family, PN.0 -
Took some pics of the hummingbird hawk moth, they're very hard to photo as their wings are so fast only come out as a blur. But I got one that I'm pleased with.

I like you can see its proboscis probing the flower. Wings just a blur though! They are amazing insects!
