Then my Oxfam must be unique then. I take a lot there and they allow me to pull my car up to a back loading door, where they have the big skips full to the brim of things they don't want. On any day they are full of mainly books and records , but also clothes toys, lots of stuffed toys . They aren't there to be sent elsewhere as the skips are often open to,the elements so the stuff inside is ruined.

You would think that Oxfam would channel these items to the companies who send lorries filled with items to third world countries. I know our local very large charity shop (which is within a small business park and is a central point to feed out to the town hospice shops within our district) have a lorry which comes in every now and again and takes away bags of items which did not sell over a period of time and the Hospice shop gets a certain amount of money for the filled bags, going by weight.

Charities are charities, and not recycling services. If I have an item that after several years I cannot sell, it is unlikely a charity shop can sell it either. It is then my responsibility to dispose of it, not to chuck it in a bag and give it to a charity shop to do it for me.

Oxfam and other charity shops exist to make money for the acivities they fund. It is not their job to use their resources to find other additional charities to farm unsellable tat off on.

Anything that can't be used is sent to a green energy plant to be incinerated to produce energy - nothing goes to landfill.

Well that depends on your definition of wasted I suppose.
  • I'd like think that charity shops would have certain wastage (I've heard stories of soiled clothes and broken junk), and that as much of it would get recycled as much as possible, but that's probably me being naive.

And *waves at OP* I think I may know you ;-)

I agree , one of our local charity shops ( and we are a town noted for the amount we have) used to have a rather aggressive message in their window saying something like' every Monday we turn up to find bags and boxes of items left by our door from car booters- PLEASE do not leave these items- if you couldn't sell it at a car boot we don't want it either. They then gave details of the rag recycling bins locally .

I do have a bunny charity locally though that will take any old rags at all, even old sheets and bedding, they sell it by weight to a company that rags it - so all my clothes with holes or stuff that in all honesty I couldn't donate goes there.

I do landfill a fair bit though- often in my stock I have broken pots or badly chipped china- there is nothing else to do with it.

When I finished with my auction house we had a load of clothes/fabric that we took to one of the weigh in places. Took a van load and got a few quid back. I thought everyone had a good deal, it was all mixed stock, some good, some bad. The next day we went again with another van load and they turned me away saying the stock wasn't good enough and a lot of it was poor quality. They told me if I wasn't going to sort it I wouldn't be welcome back, I've never been back. Shame really as I had about 4 pallets of towels a week later that I needed to shift quickly.
Seems everyone has standards. It won't be long before the tips have signs up about the quality of rubbish you can send to landfill!

Anything broken or damaged goes straight in the bin, but there are some items that are perfectly fine, but not suitable for me to sell. It is such a shame to bin them, but that is what happens.

I rarely go into charity shops, but when I do, I am surprised at how much they want for some things. I have units in an antique centre and don't charge those prices !

Local scout groups may be interested in old chipped china for their china breaking stalls at fairs (cant remember the proper name for it).
