How to Boost WiFi and Movie Download Services

Options
Morning everyone!

Really appreciate help from those in the know please...

We have a large old house with solid walls and currently have a Netgear 4500 router. The wifi currently doesn't reach either end of the house or my husband's Games Room, which is a brick detached building situated about 10 foot from one side of the house.

Fly first question is how do I get a strong enough house wifi system to work throughout the house and games room please? Hotels do it so it must be possible, surely.

Secondly, my husband currently wastes (sorry, point of conflict) a lot of money buying loads of Blu rays. If I can get wifi into his games room, is there some form of movie download service that you can pay a monthly subscription for so he can stop buying all these DVD's.

Thank you so much for your help! Any advice gratefully received!

Happy Easter!

He should take a look at Kodi for his movies. This is as good a place to start

You'll need some kind of wi-fi extender for your other problem unless you can move your router

    Use home plugs.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

the search engine on this site is quite good , in fact the next posting down asks the same question , and indeed has been answered https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5211627

perhaps a little hint to put you in the right direction , a word that often crops up in answering those questions

homeplugs , available in many type , wired or even wifi.

let your finger do the searching ,,,

Firstly, apologies, I swear the question before mine was not there when I started typing, but never the less, I should have searched, really sorry!

We have a drawer with about four of the home plug things that my husband bought a few years ago, but they didn't work well and so we gave up with them. Is that the only option, is there no industrial strength router option?

I will give the plugs another try too. Out of interest, have they improved over recent years, ours are probably 2-3 years old now.

    Thanks so much once again!

do you have 2 electric meters in the house? (ie 2 different circuits?)

try the home plugs , I use a double wall socket (that way there is no walking involved)

there have been about 3 different "speeds" of homeplugs ,

    Thank you again!

We have just one electric meter but three different fuse boards for different parts of the house, does that make a difference?

The plugs we have are called 200Mbps power line Ethernet adapter. It says they are "home plug AV 1.0 compliant" not sure what that means. Should these work?

I also have a Netgear wifi range extender, but we have given up on that, as although we could connect to it, it wouldn't give you Internet, for whatever reason. As you can see, I have a drawer full of my failed attempts to stretch the wifi!

perhaps a trip to argos , sale or return?

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1397640.htm?CMPID=GS001&_%24ja=cgid:12504951290%7Ctsid:59158%7Ccid:200290250%7Clid:94813103450%7Cnw:g%7Ccrid:54924976250%7Crnd:920698163965773240%7Cdvc:c%7Cadp:1o2%7Cbku:1

they tend NOT to work thru extension leads , perhaps the argos ones , as the main one , then add your slightly slower ones in additional points

on that argos link , there is setting up instructions "docs" , download the "TP-LINK 500Mbps Nano Powerline Adapter - Twin Pack. Documentation" , although yours are older , those instructions should suffice

Thank you again. I have tried setting up the ones we have and initially, all was great - good wifi through the 'powerline' in a bedroom where there is usually nothing. However, after about 3 minutes, internet was lost. On a laptop it showed full wifi strength but no internet and likewise on a pad.

When we then tried to connect directly through the router (sitting right next to it) - i.e to our original netgear wifi, that connected but again no internet. I've ended up having to disconnect the powerlines to get any internet again.

Do you think the Plug things we have are faulty or that they are conflicting with the Netgear router? Or maybe something else?

well dunno , but as suggested earkier , try the ones from argos , and use there sale or return policy

"most" homeplugs are compatible with other homeplugs

so you should be able to use the two argos ones (one next to router , one farthest away) and add your older ones to the setup to create more "spots"

there is a second link on that other page that shows the "wifi" versions ,(they are on the argos page as well) all should be compatable with each other , so adding extras won't be hard
