Boosting wifi signal to garage?

Hello all,
I've gone through a search and 20 pages of the Techie Stuff forum and haven't found an existing thread, so apologies if this has been covered before.

I'm building an office in my garage and have taken my laptop out there to see if the wifi will stretch. From my BT Home Hub it seems that emails are OK but for web browsing it is a struggle.

Can anyone recommend some low-cost options for extending the signal?

or better still Home plug wifi extender, but for this the garage needs to be on the same electrical plug circuit as the house

I've got a WiFi repeater, which I bought cheap and wired in two 9dBi antenna, the "box" is in the garage, the antenna are routed through the wall and spaced 5inches apart on the outside of the garage.

Thanks for the answer. What does home plug mean? I've seen a BT Extender 600, is that the same thing?

you put one in the house near your router and plug a lead from your router into it.


the other plugs into the wall socket in your garage , and a wire runs to your computer,


unfortunately it will not give you a wireless setting in the garage , only a wired one.


there are generally 2 different speeds available , the one shown is ample
they are also available with a 13a socket on the back of them to make them pass thru (reducing No of sockets used) , they (normally do not work if plugged into extension leads


someone can probably talk you thru converting an old wireless router, plugged into the homeplug in the garage to get you wirelessed up

You can buy Homeplugs where one of the pair is a wireless unit, if you don't want to use ethernet from the nearest 13A socket.
The 2 ends don't need to be on the same ring main, only on the same CU.

I have a set of Powerline adapters (Homeplugs) to power my summer office at the bottom of the Garden. I just plug in down at the office, 2 minutes and away we go. All on the same network as the Study PC.
No messing with WiFi, I leave that for the tablets and phones.

He doesn't need that if he just wants to wire his laptop/PC to the network. However, to give a bit more flexibility it would be ideal.
