NHS Viagra ????

Options
Hi - My partner has to take meds for high blood pressure. As I'm sure you know they have side-effects.
We asked the doctor about this, & he offers us Cialis (sorry sus spelling) on a private prescription - which is around £40.
As we live on benefits this is something we just cant afford.
Does the nhs supply viagra or whatever???
Many thanks

    Hi mousey,

Viagra is available on the NHS, but only under strict conditions. I would go back to your GP, and ask whether your partner fulfils the criteria set by NICE (Institute for Clinical Excellence).

My dad used to get it from the NHS but he was a diabetic.

And they would only give him 4 tablets a month.

You can find generic Cialis, called Tadafil, at several suppliers on the internet. A lot cheaper than private prescriptions and just as good. My partner says Cialis is much better than Viagra because its effects last for nearly 2 days, so he doesn't have to stick to a tight timetable or waste any.

    Good luck!

I don't know the specific law, but my understanding is that buying prescription medication over the internet is illegal.

It's possible to get various medications via the NHS that are designed to treat impotence. There have to be certain conditions pre-existing, and diabetes is one.

Viagra did not work for DH. All he got was a thumping headache, and you mention high blood-pressure - this could be dangerous. It relaxes all blood-vessels throughout the body, not just where you want the increased blood supply!

There is also an injectable medication available on the NHS called Caverject. Yes, you're right, that's exactly where you have to inject it! Makes your eyes water just to think about, but it worked, for a while.

The trouble is, many of these pre-existing conditions damage all the tiny blood-vessels, also the little 'valves' that prevent the blood flowing back out. So even if you get an erection it may not last, or it may not be enough.

We have more or less had to accept that there is no medication on this earth, paid for or not, that is going to work as we'd like it to. It's so, so sad! Why didn't we meet 50 years ago when we could have sh*gged like rabbits and at least had the memories?

Still, it's not the only way of loving each other.

How refreshing to get an honest, frank response for such a delicate subject.

Exactly. One of the risks of these types of medication is a thing called 'priapism' in which - no way of saying this politely - the erection just does not subside. Inconvenient, painful, even dangerous. Since we're getting into these deep waters, and before this thread gets pulled, a man can't pass urine with an erection that won't go down for 3 days. This causes damage to the bladder, so hospital treatment may be necessary.

Why would that be a problem? Dilating (relaxing) blood vessels would lower BP...
