hi All, i am making a baking cookbook for my younger sister - its weird - she is amazing at meals - ie starters adn main courses but cant make a pudding to save her life. The last scones she attempted could of been hockey pucks they were that hard. Me on the other hand, am fine with deserts - no problem its the main courses that get me.Anywhoo......im wanting to make her a baking recipe book with some of the basic things she can make. Ive decided im going to put a sponge cake mix in there and the how to make up icing properly (so many disasters with this over the years you wouldnt believe!) and the other part of her present is ive brought ehr all the basics she needs for baking - ie cake tins, cup cake tins, sieve, wooden spoons, spatulas, rolling pin, cookie cutters etc etc. and put them in a hamper for her.I was just wondering what other recipes you could want in a basic baking cookbook. I really cant think so can anyone help me please. any suggestions??
Time to find me again

cookies, twinks hobnobs, swiss roll, traybakes, xmas cake/pud, lemon drizzle cake, mince pies are all things that I would add0

what a fantastic idea, which I may nick, if you don't mind. A section of stuff to make with fruit (eg fool / trifle etc) may be nice. (My rule on puddings is that it should have at least one fruit in it, in an attempt to be a healthy sweet-toothed person):heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

Blackberry crumble, blackberry jams, blackberry rumtopfs... why? Cos the little blighters are free! :rotfl:
Why not look at the library for a pudding dessert book and copy any recipies you really like into a book for herYou could to save time photo copy the recipies and paste them in like a scrapbook
saving on the hand writing for little personal comments
Then you could glue in little things like a dried flower or leaf, a piece of a Twix wrapper by the Twix hobnobs recipe etc...
I'm sure it'll look great!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

different breads sweet and savoury, muffins, cookies (I have an excellent triple choc recipe if your interested, pm me if you are), shortbread, fruit cake, fairy cakes, chocolate cake or brownies.0

Jam Tarts - a nice easy one for her to start with!!
I have also found Coconut Tarts and Almond Slices to be pretty much foolproof and even I have managed to make them recently (both from my BeRo cookbook).0 -
My carrot cake!
Carrot Cake
2 eggs
1/2 (half) tea spoon ground cinnamon
1/2 (half) tea spoon bicarb soda
2 medium carrots, peeled & roughly chopped
185g butter/marg (i use vitalite) - melted
3/4 cup sugar (white or brown can be used)
1 cup of s.r flour (can us wholemeal also, works better with brown sugar)
1 cup of sultana's (optional)
or if you want to add walnuts, then add 1/2 cup & half cup of sultana's.
in the Food processor place the eggs, soda, cinnamon & carrots, whizz until a thick liquid is formed
add the melted butter & sugar
whizz
add flour, (fruit & nuts if your adding them)
whizz untill combined
place into a loaf size tin (i use 2 x 1lb loaf tins)
bake in moderate oven (gas mark 3) sorry, dont know number for electric, for about 50mins, or until cooked in the middle, by checking with a skewer.
You can use a butter creamed icing for the top, but the cake never lasts long for me to do this!
Tried & tested & highly recommended. Been using this for nearly 15yrs, and used to bake it for the officers, when I served in the Army.

Loads of suggestions here I'd want in a recipe book (& do have - mine are printed out, laminated, hole punched & put in a folder, this way I can take out the one(s) I want to use, & they're wipe clean) I also have sections for seasonal occasions such as christmas, i.e christmas pud, mince pies, triffle etc, Easter - hot cross buns, chocolate nests etcYou cant take a step forward with both feet on the ground0

Has anyone found an A5 folder for their collections yet though? I wanted something smaller than an A4 but it seems to be near on impossible!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
