I've been taken to court!

Hi guys,
I live in Scotland and over the past couple of years got a few parking tickets. I had a look on this forum and read the sticky thread that said if I live in Scotland I could just ignore them and nothing would happen, and now I've received a court summons! I'm being sued for £870.00, plus expenses!
First of all, why do you tell people to ignore tickets if they could end up going to court, and secondly, what do I do now?
I'm freaking out a bit because I can't afford to pay this and certainly can't afford a lawyer! I wish I'd never seen the advice about ignoring them and just paid the first one when it was only £50!
What happens if I lose? Will this totally destroy my credit rating? Me and my wife were hoping to get a mortgage sometime!
Please help!
Danny

This is a public forum and opinions come from a lot of people - knowledgeable and sometimes not so knowledgeable. It is therefore prudent to confirm any opinions expressed here.

Perhaps it would help if you give a little more information so that people can offer you an opinion. For a start - was the ticket issued by a PPC or local authority.0 -
Which company and did they claim the keeper is liable? Bear in mind CEL are being prosecuted in Scotland today on charges of fraud over their parking tickets your answers could be important.0
