H Samuel exchanged my engagement ring for a smaller size no problem at all, a week after it was given to me (we were on holiday so waited till we were back) and over a month after OH had bought it.

I'd push for an exchange if you can (if you don't mind it not literally being the ring he proposed with), it'll make it easier to resize later on (i.e. when you get old and fat!) if it hasn't been done already
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard
  • I worked for Ernest Jones for many years, normally a sizing would be a week, and going to an independent jeweler, would not necessarily be quicker, as in Guildford they all used the same company. The mistake you made was telling them you had worn it, as they can only offer a resize, which should be quicker anyway than ordering a new size. I would push them to have it back quicker. Congrats.

Do you have to use the branch it was purchased from? If you have an Ernest Jones receipt, could you take it to another store and say it hasn't been worn?
  • Thanks. I'm going to have to have it resized really as I don't really want to have to go to a different branch to push for an exchange. After looking online, lots of people mentioned taking their ring to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham as some shops can do it there and then. We are actually in Birmingham tomorrow for a show. Anyone know of any which can do a quick resize and how much it would cost? I really don't want to have to go 2-3 weeks without it as we are announcing it to friends and family officially next week (they already know but we haven't seen them yet) so I would really like to have my ring for that

I always thought for women size doesn't matter :rotfl:

It does if you want a good fit :D
  • My jeweller said it is easier to make a ring bigger than it is smaller, I think they have to chop a bit out and work on it closely to make sure you can't see the join with regard to making it smaller. Obviously resizing can affect how securely the stone(s) are held too. Whilst a pain, I would probably rather it got sent off to be done properly than quickly in a day.

I don't imagine they have workshops on site like an independent jeweller might, but at least if EJ do it then if something goes wrong I would trust them to fix it being the retailer you bought it from. I'm paranoid, but I would worry about taking it somewhere different to be resized in case something went wrong a few weeks down the line and a stone fell out etc.

We impulsively bought a ring overseas as it is coming up to our 15th wedding anniversary - when I took it to our local jeweller they wouldn't resize it as there was too big a size change and it might have weakened the setting so this is a real concern. The ring is an N and my finger is a J. I have no way of taking the ring back so have had to opt for wearing it on a different figure which only requires a half size reduction. It is going to take 10 days and cost 'no more than £60'

    That's such a shame :(

The jewellers who are making my ring and often melt down old gold and make it into something new for people. Maybe one day you could do something like that if you do want it on that finger :)

    Hi,

what about a ring clip reducer,

    lady.jpg.

I wouldn't use that on a ring you intend wearing every day. You will get some erosion where the metal of the reducer meets the ring. It also won't be as comfortable as a proper sized ring.

Most places in the Birmingham Jewellery quarter manufacture onsite. We've used Neweys and Cirrus Diamonds before with no problems. If its during the week they quiet often do resizing etc within 1hour. No idea on cost as the only things I've had re-sized I bought from them aswell.

    Hope that helps.
