New engagement ring - wrong size

My boyfriend proposed on Saturday evening, I tried on my ring, thinking it was a little big but I was cold so wore it for the rest of the evening to see. Took it into Ernest Jones the next day to see what they thought and they agreed I should go a size smaller but it would have to be resized as I had worn it so they couldn't exchange. Is this normal practice? It's not like I'd worn it for weeks then changed my mind. They also said it would take 2-3 weeks to resize which I thought was a bit long. Has anyone else had any experience with exchanging or resizing their rings?

I think it is standard, but the re-size should be free/included in the cost of the ring-X-Missima-X-0

Congratulations!
That seems a bit extreme to say that it would have to be resized rather than exchanged after you'd tried it/worn it for an evening! If they won't exchange it don't send it to them to be resized, go to an independent jeweller, they are usually quicker and cheaper than the big chains.
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0 -
Yes, I would say that is standard practice. Couldn't say for sure as I'm not a jeweller, but the ring has been worn, so it is second hand and you can't really expect them to exchange it.
My ring was too big for me so I took it back and got it resized. Can't remember how long it was away for, but it was definetly over a week.
Personally I wouldn't want to exchange it, as that is the ring you got given when your OH proposed to you.0 -
An independent one wouldn't be cheaper as ernest Jones will do it for free if we have it done within 30 days (which is 18th April). Plus I have no idea what jewellers we have that are reputable, unless anyone here is from the bedfordshire area and can recommend someone?0

Mine took about 3 weeks to be resized by Goldsmiths.0

If it is majorly big for you then an independent wont charge much at all. They're getting a lump of gold at the end of the day. I took my Grandma's ringin to be sized for me and as there was so much difference he didnt charge as he kept the gold as he's a working jeweller.Married the lovely Mr P 28th April 2012. Hi,
what about a ring clip reducer,.

It would be free if you go back to original jewellers, they may give a maximum timescale so it could well be back in a week.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

Its sentimental that that is the ring you got engaged with, so I wouldn't want it exchanged, I would want that particular ring resized.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Woolfe's in the Centre MK, Milton Keynes - they are a high quality manufacturing jeweller and have been around for years.
