Also whilst on the Scottish power website I found a page whereby you can jiggle your direct debit payments within certain limits, very useful for making your DD tidy– mine was £??.44 so I’ve now made it a neat exact amount 

I then set up OHs annual prescription pass DD – you can pay over 10 months £10.40 a month or the amount in one lump but as it costs no more then you might as well pay monthly.

And thinking about the monthly direct debits I realised this will be the first year for 3 years we are paying the water bill via DD. For the last two years I’ve used the !!!!!! 3V cards to pay off the bill and usually I had it cleared by May and often went slightly into credit so we didn’t need the DD.

The same with the sky bill, every time I got 3V cards I would add another £25 to the account so we have been in credit for almost 2 years so no need for the DD.

Sadly the 3V cards now seem to be very scarce and Ive not seen any this year yet.

So on the list of our direct debits we have now got 3 additional ones
£10.40 prescription annual
£22 – water
£50 – sky or thereabout depending on the calls
Total £82.

OH had a new tax code sent to him last week (probably the first of many) and using the nifty MSE tax calculator code I worked out that we would have an extra £20 a week exactly :j

So that’s £80 a month which coincidentally is about the same as the new DDs :mad:

Deep sigh. I think we have reached the pinnacle now – never ever going to get any richer
Time to go and fill some bags to take to the food banks, count blessings and realise there is always someone worse off than you …

Don't forget that Sky are generally very good with their retentions offers (50% or more can be achieved from reports on the retentions thread) if you are out of contract and can give notice to quit to prompt them to negotiate.

Another little addition to the tax thing. If you're trading, even if you don't think there will actually be any tax liability, you still need to register. It's the tax man who decides whether anything is due, not you.

re the tax situation I think that you have to go with the presumption that you will be taxed on your profits and therefore you need to set aside a percentage - maybe into a little savings account in readiness - maybe at least 30%.
- especially if this is a 2nd job and your main occupation pays you more than your tax allowance.

also if you do declare yourself self employed you need to be paying National Insurance - plenty of info on the HMRC website.

and if your empire is co ordinated from home and you use one room as your office it may have an effect on your council tax, house insurance etc but you may be able to declare this an expense on your tax form - heat, electric, broadband etc and get some allowance.

My sister and her OH have their own business and they had a run in with the tax man - years ago now but they are still terrified of the tax man .

not liking the selling debate obviously everyone has different views, perhaps there is a thread better for carbooting and tax discussions than here, then the moral and legal issues will not be raised and no bad feelings will be caused, I think what people do with their glitchy items is their business but maybe its a good idea to keep it to yourselfs, we all have different lines that we will not cross and sometimes flaunting what you do causes upset and offence to others, espeacily if they find the glitch,

this is not aimed at anyone and I hope it has not caused offence to anyone just my thoughts about keeping the harmony of the thread xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Yes I did very well with the retentions team last year and we got a good enough deal. I have a day set aside in July when my renewal date comes up ready to do battle again .
My bug bear is with the line rental. I was quite happy paying for it annually but they stopped that. After some discussion last year we ended up with discounted line rental so I was only paying the same amount as I would have been, a HD sky box, an upgraded package etc. plus a better call package and all for about the same money.
I've already had one phone call to them and they said we are preferred customers because of the time we have been with them - just how special we are and how much sky really does love us we will see in July
