I have tried changing the router to PC cable, the router to filter socket and the filter itself. I have reset hundreds of times by now. The only thing I did not change was the router as I had no other but now I do, a brand new one from Talktalk and still it does exactly the same thing.
You need to stop this, resetting disconnecting or turning off the router only serves to register a fault on the line, which will cause the line speed to be dropped to a lower speed BRAS profile.
You need to leave it alone for several weeks or maybe even ask them to reset your profile.
Think about it, the equipment at the exchange just see's you losing connection, it doesn't know your turning the router off, so it drops the line speed to attempt to stabilise it.
So very often, the people who complain of slow speeds, are the same people who turn their routers on/off every time they use the internet.
A lot of ISPs put a power save mode on their routers, where it basically just turns off all the LEDs so that the owner doesn't keep pulling the plug and causing themselves a lot of hassle, as well as hassle for the ISPs tech support call centre and bad online reviews for that ISP.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

agreed, hence I asked for them in post #13, but it looks like the OP has not returned as yet......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Hi guys sorry for the gap, I had to wait to get back to my Mother and Fathers house where the problem is.
Really appreciate so many replies now going through them trying things to see if anything makes a difference.
Here is todays ADSL Summary if that helps at all.
ADSL (Sync) Summary
System uptime: 1d:22h:59m:37s
Modem ADSL (Sync) uptime: 1d:22h:58m:35s
Interleaving: On
ADSL mode: G.DMT
ADSL setting: VPI: 0 VCI: 38
ADSL line speed (kbps): Up: 864 Down: 256
Line attenuation (dB): Up: 22.0 Down: 32.5
SN margin (dB): Up: 10.0 Down: 41.0
Total errors seconds: 301
Any clues from this?
Any other info from router settings I could find that would reveal anything?0 -
Someone mentioned that the line could be throttled down, is there any way I can test for this?
They never turn the router off by the way, they are not tech savy and touch anything like this very little. I have turned it off a ton of times whilst trying to resolve the problem but up until this problem we never really touched it much.0 -
SN margin (dB): Up: 10.0 Down: 41.0
Power cycle the router and grab the stats again immediatly after it comes back up.0 -

Ok this is what came up after power off and power on. Left it off for about 1 minute and then went straight to these readings when it connected.0 -
Can you confirm that is with the new router in a filter in the inner socket on the master socket with the faceplate off and that there is no wiring (to the best of your knowledge) to the back of the master socket.
Have you tried using a different filter? I imagine the new router came with one plus the original so you should be able to swap them.
Was there anything at all you are aware of changed just before the low speeds were spotted?
TBH I've never seen stats with such a huge downstream noise margin and I suspect they could just be shown reversed - ie a 10dB downstream margin. Even with that the sync should be way way higher - a 32dB line attenuation should be delivering about maximum sync on ADSL and even with a 10dB margin I'd guess it should be 6Mbps at least.
With the stats so nonsensical it's hard to be sure what is going on - as the sync varied it's hard to see how it could be a fixed speed cap and I really can't believe any profile would have a target margin that high.
I think TalkTalk have a decent support forum which their tech people visit - if they do your best way forward is to take this issue there because I can't see anything other than misconfiguration or equipment faults being the problem here and only TT can sort that out.0 -

Yeah, I can see now how you're getting a 41dB snrm down, a line capable of around 7700kb/s on a 6dB margin has been borked by profile to 256kb/s (a very old figure I remember well, from when broadband just got increased to 256kb/s, thought it was like lightening) which would produce a massive (i.e.41dB) downstream snrm. The slower the line is limited to, the larger the downstream snrm will become as there will be less noise on the line.
It needs a call to TT to reset your profile, ask for 8INT9* and see how stable the line is then
* - 8INT9 would be 8meg, interleaved, at 9dB snrm downstream. If they do this, expect to sync around 7000kb/s.
edit:- the profiles I've given above assume it's an LLU line, clarify this with TT support when you call. If it's an IPStream line, you need them to get OR to reset the line and the (evil) DLM..if that's the case., good luck..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Doh! I missed the 256 down - I assumed it was up.
Diagnosis spot on. Question is how did it get that profile? If all the extensions are disconnected now will it screw up again when they are re-connected? OP needs to check they are all filtered if there is anything attached to them (Sky box, phone, burglar alarm, whatever).0
