Good luck!! i quit properly a week before the smoking ban came in and it's been really easy. On and off smoker for 9 years and it's a great feeling when someone lights up next to you and you think "that really stinks! did i use to smell like that?"

    Good luck Peardrops :)

As you can see from my sig I've been smoke free since November (after 15 years of 20 a day :() I really notice the difference in taste and smell....and now with the smoking ban you won't be the social outcast stood out in the rain having a crafty fag!

Are you going cold turkey or using NRT? I used the Nicotinell Nasal Spray and found them to be brilliant - I had tried all other forms of NRT and always lapsed after a few days.

Just take it one day at a time - you WILL crave ciggies on and off (I'm sat here now thinking about how nice it would be to sit out on the patio and have a quick puff - but I'll have another G&T instead ;)) just keep thinking about your kids andf the benefits of being a smoke free parent!!

    Good luck!

    Here's a larf!

Last easter I went up to a small island in Orkney with the kids. Our smoking ban had just come in. Went down to the local (and only) pub for Lunch. The locals looked nervously at us as we entered. They all sat figiting with their fag packets, so I said "Don't worry about us", hoping they would just light up, so I could also. I was told, "Naw, its illegal now", thinking how rediculous that was since the police only came to the island one day a week.

To their word, nobody did light up, and went outside for their smoke. A couple of hours later I watched in dismay as these locals, totally drunk, got into their cars and "drove" home!

  • Good luck Peardrops, you can do it. I gave up 6 weeks ago tomorrow it is the best thing you can do for yourself. Very soon you will feel so much better and fitter.
I gave up using Champix, fairly new pill on the market, and found it quite easy. I still sometimes want a cig just a light craving that soon passes but know that I can never have just one.
Fingers crossed for you, take care.

    Well todays the day!!!!

Take every bit of help and support you can to help it's well worth the effort. Just make sure you're doing it for you and not because you feel you ought to....that's where I failed.

I've not smoked for eight years now (25 years smoker, up to 35 a day).
It's not gonna be easy, but if you find yourself wanting one get up and do something to distract yourself. Make a batch of cookies or whatever - you can't smoke whilst you're cooking  or washing up and eating 1 or 2 of the result is worth it!!

Don't use crises as an excuse to start again, I've been thru a divorce and lost my remaining parent since I gave up.

Your practice nurse will help you through it I'm sure. Good luck :T .

  • changing the habit is the hard thing, i used to sit on a step in my kitchen by the back door and smoke... i havent sat on that step since i gave up because i associated it with fags,

be prepared for food to taste a hell of a lot better, and also the next time you spend any time with some smokers to think 'my GOD that smells horrible!'
i went round my dads recently and the whole flat stunk, not only that but after being with him for about 2 hours i left with a nasty sore throat thanks to him lighting up

    Well done

    And good luck of course!
  • People keep referring to it as 'giving up' - isn't it really gaining? Money, health, fresh breath, and most of all FREEDOM from cigarettes. Not caring anymore whether you have any or not or how much gas is in your lighter, or where you can and can't smoke etc etc... you're not giving up anything :) you're just STOPPING being a slave to it.

As for the habit... I think it's a bit of a myth, I had my habits, or so I thought, go for a break at 10.30 with colleague, then wait for lunch, then tea break... now I don't smoke I don't watch the clock either, I just don't think about it. But also, think of other habits that are so easy to break, why is this any different. If you work at the same job for ten years you get into the habit of driving a certain route to work. You start a new job, and you immediately adjust to your new journey to work - you don't find yourself turning up at your old place three days in because you can't break the habit.

I might be over-simplifying but that's only because I believe it IS simple, and that's why I was able to stop without a single craving. I smoked from age 14 to age 26, I was one of those people who genuinely ENJOYED it, after all there's nothing like a diet coke and a cigarette, or a beer and a cigarette, or a coffee and a cigarette etc etc etc, but they are soooo much nicer without :)

I used Allen Carr's book/cd, if it wasn't for him I'd still be trapped.

But all this aside, GOOD LUCK, whatever you do, do NOT doubt your ability to stop
