Wish me luck - D Day tomorrow!

I've been and signed on at the doctors for the 12 week stop smoking plan!

Tomorrow is THE DAY!

I can't afford it, it is filling my lungs with tar and cyanide and I can't tell my kids not to smoke if I do.

Wish me luck ..........................

I'm 36 years old and have been smoking regularly for 23 years!!!!!!!!!!! My god I've been smoking for 2 thirds of my life!

    That is dreadful

I have the inhalators rather than the patches as I don't smoke until the evening and then make up for it BIG time!

I can't wait to say when someone asks for a light "sorry I don't smoke!!!!!"
  • i smoked 20 a day for 15 years, half my life!!!
(only stopping to be pregnant and for the first 2 years of DDs life... dont ask why i started again! lol)

and i gave up cold turkey nearly 10 months ago, i tried and failed to give it up before because it was my favourite thing and i just wasnt ready... im a firm believer that unless you really want to pack it in, you will fail

i wont kid you, its not easy (especially if you love it as much as i did... really, it wasnt just a habit for me, it was something i reallllllly enjoyed)
but each day will get progressively easier, it wont feel like it for the first week, so can i suggest as well as your programme you consider making a chart,
put tomorrows date on it and everytime you get the urge to light up, put a tick on the chart, then the next day do the same... the next day, the next day etc...
i didnt feel any better by the end of the first week (i could have snapped the next person i saw with a fag) but when i looked at the chart i realised i had wanted one less and less each day, and after that the numbers dropped significantly until i finally had a day where i didnt think about it at all!

although its not currently crossing my mind at all because im pregnant and you couldnt pay me to smoke at the moment, i still miss it...
im a recovering nicotine addict, and the daily motto that got me through it was this
"I WILL NOT smoke today.... and probably wont tomorrow either"
adopt that, and you wont go far wrong...

    good luck!

Good luck, you can do it if you really want to!!

There's no way to cheat on the 12 week plan anyway.

Patches and alot of will power worked for me, just take each hour at a time. Tick each one off as you get through it without a smoke and congratulate yourself for each one....it does get easier, honest.

    What fantastic advice, thank you.

I never smoke in the mornings or at work, haven't done since 1996! I light my first fag when I get home from work at 5.10pm. I then can get through 15 until bedtime.

What I know I need to do it change my habit, not my addiction...

Hubby is enrolling on the course next Monday and he will be put on patches as he is a heavier smoker.

I might still go outside (never smoke in the house) with him for a cig but I will take my inhalator instead. You can have 12 cartridges per day, I can't see me using more than 5 to be honest as each cartridge is up to 20 mins of puffing.

But I think I might go straight into the tub when I get home to break the habit of having a cig when I get home. Then after dinner when we retreat to the back garden for another cig I might go and run the kids baths etc.

I need to change my habit much more than the addiction I'm sure.

I was a 20 a day smoker and have now been off them for 3 years 2 months and 3 weeks lol!

I did the patches with the extra crutch of the inhalator which was extremely handy for social situations. I also made sure I carried on doing things I did before like go out to smoking friends houses etc as much to test my resolve as for anything else.

Another thing I did was every day put in a clear jar with a stuck down lid the amount of money I would have spent that day on cigarettes. I was shocked when after only weeks I bought a decent digital camera and accesories!!

Good luck and keep us posted with your progress

    Good luck peardrops :)

    Katie :)
  • Well done to all you quitters. How fantastic and the money saved is amazing I'm sure.

Also one thing that I find the hardest is the finality of it. When you diet you still get to eat, OK not kebabs, currys and chocolate, but you still can eat.

Giving up the cigs is so final. I can't wait but it is a scary proposition....
