we would never do it without warning. What happened today was a !!!! up. Someone was meant to add a few tweaks to the existing trial users accounts. Yet they switchedit on for all.

I was working on the weekly email the time. And when I heard I went ballistic . And asked immediately for it to be rolled back which is what happened.

in some ways this is why one of the reasons why I am sanguine about some of the comments above. We would never have done it this way. Never have communicated it this way. I'm not doinge it without giving people a clear explanation of what our plans are and how it all fits together

This angst could have and should have been avoided. And I apologise to anyone whoe was disturbed by it However we still do plan to roll out the changes at some point soon though we are of course listening to the feedback

PS I am speech dictating this at speed while still heavily working on the weekly email as my RSI is back so apologies for anything that doesn't make sense

Thanks for that Martin. It does make more sense now. Hope the pain eases soon. I mean the RSI, not us :D At least with RSI you have a realistic hope for some relief. Also I want to take the opportunity to say a sincere thanks for the site. I use it a lot, and not entirely for comping. I know it's helped soooo many people struggling with various things.

    Best wishes

I disliked it because it made my eyes hurt not because it was different.

I could get used to a new layout of the forum, it's always difficult at first but you get used to it after a while. However, the one that we got today made me feel physically ill. It hurt my eyes & I had a headache within 5 minutes. I had to look away or I would have started with a migraine. If that was the only option I wouldn't be able to use it. Pleased to hear we can still use the old style at least for the being.

My first experience of using the new style today was on my mobile....I switched back as quickly as possible as it was just as bad trying to use the new format on my phone as it appears it was for those using it on a bigger device.

The old format worked/works perfectly fine on my mobile but then, I am one of those weird people who doesn't like the reduced capability of apps or mobile versions of sites or their appearance.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I am all for embracing mobile technology but I have to agree. The vast majority of mobile or tablet device versions of websites are poor. My main criticism of them is the severe lack of functionality.

These "responsive" websites that are being forced upon us now due to Google's new directive are pretty much awful so far, things will get better though of course.

It's not about not liking change, it's about not liking the changes MSE made.
There needs to be some major improvements from the Beta version that someone sprung onto an unsuspecting audience.
We know that the vast majority of users will be ignored and the launch will go ahead, because, admitting you are wrong is, sometimes, too hard.
I'll stick with the old version, until you switch it off (I suspect that won't be too long) then have a look around for a replacement.
Shame really, as this is a forum with a good mix of folks.:)

  • Fine, the old users and their opinions don't really count for anything, it's Google and new users that are the Gods. Fair enough, any business is entitled to adjust its priorities, Martin Lewis decided to sell this site for millions, so the new owners rule. But in the interest of real consumer power ( which Martin constantly shouts) allow those who leave the site to remove their details and posts at a single stroke. And the old argument of how it would disrupt threads is exposed as pure crap by the fact that anyone can painstakingly delete every post they have ever made if they have the time. This site might have many members but lots registered, got fed up, left, and have never returned, but are still listed. Artificial numbers, not half :)

    3. The forum is broke. We need to make it better for mobile devices or we risk the fact google will no longer list it on mobile and we want people to have access to it whatever the medium
    4. We've been testing this with a large panel of users for many months, this isn't just being sprung from nowhwere - and we asked for volunteers. Yet of course we want your feedback to make the new one more comfortable and better for you to use, but 'scrap it' doesn't help.

I'm rather surprised to hear it's been extensively tested, given I've found several issues this afternoon. Edit: and more just now.

I've reported some of them on the bugs thread, and a bit on the feedback thread, so I hope someone on the staff will read them.

I'm not upset about the colours, and I actually like there no longer being redundant column space on the right (except at the top corner), but having pictures and lines of text truncated and partly inaccessible as they disappear on the right hand side, and having different problems for holding a tablet in portrait or landscape alignment, shows me the testing needs more work on stylesheets and formats, especially for the mobile use you are highlighting as a reason for wanting improvement.

Edit: that was about using a tablet. I just tried a mobile. Some things better, different things worse. On a board page can't go to latest post or even a specific page on a thread. Can't search ones own posts then go direct to a chosen one, such as one might do to see if there are subsequent replies, but instead have to go to start of thread and step through pages. Though to be fair this happens on tablet as well as mobile.

And it's possible to stop in just the wrong place while scrolling on a mobile in landscape alignment and have no actual post text shown at all. This is because the name and avatar are shown above the post rather than to the left.

So I seem to have substantially reduced functionality for mobile use in the new version, not more.

I have a nasty feeling any reply I might get will be like the time I found the gsmarena website swamped by a Subway sandwich header advert about 4 or 6 times its size, and the snobby twit who replied said my phone must be too cheap. I sent him back a PC screenshot and said I could understand his comment that they didn't control the adverts.

Why do we need to see the "statistics" - number of threads and posts ?

It seems like a bad design, badly implemented, with poor testing.
Sounds like a recipe for success ... :(
