Vodafone new contract - swapping number from one sim to another

Based on having spent the last 3 hours dealing with Vodafone, I'm no longer convinced what I intend on doing is a good idea, but here goes.

What I want to do is purchase a new phone on a contract micro sim then take the sim out, transfer the new number to a standard sim, then put this into a blackberry.

Is that feasible and how simple is it to do? Thank you

I already have a well established contract phone with vodafone, I just want another contract, but I'd be happy for the new phone too as it is only a few pounds dearer per month.

My wife wants another phone for work, she won't use a smartphone, we tried before, and the compromise is the blackberry I have. But this involves transferring the new number from a micro sim to a standard sim.

Hope I've made sense, many thanks.

    Just incase you didn't know.

There are SIM only contracts, where you purchase minutes etc (just without the phone). This would give you the SIM size you want and for a few £ less.

THere are also SIM adaptors available on ebay. Not sure I would want one long term, but anyway...

    Hello Andy

thank you, that was my original intent but I saw I can get as many minutes, more texts and a phone for just £3 a month more

The only way to get your number moved to the new sim is to port it, not transfer. And this can be done only in two steps if the new sim is with the same Vodafone:
    1. Get PAC from Voda and a PAYG sim from other provider, then port the number to the new sim.
    2. Get PAC from the 'other' provider (most likely you'll be asked to top up first) and port the number to the new Vodafone sim.
The only way to do this simply is either change the provider or upgrade with Vodafone instead of getting a new contract.

Thank you Grumbler. Not quite as straightforward as I first thought then. I might consider your latter suggestion although I may just stick with purchasing the sim card only and do without a new phone for me for the time being.

    Cheers

If it's a *new* sim-only with the same Vodafone, you'll face the same problem with keeping your old number.
If your want to stay with Vodafone (why?) you have to ask them to switch you to the sim-only deal you want.

I'm a little confused. I'd have thought the network would send a replacement sim in a different size with the same number, replacing the original, for use in a different phone. I did that once without much problem. Of course, this is Vodafone we're talking about... my sympathies.

To be honest, I too thought it would be straightforward.

However, having spent 3 hours dealing with 3 different representatives this morning, all of them said 'straightforward ' is the last thing it'll be. All that said, not one of them filled me with confidence.

The reason for vodafone is that we are right out in the sticks and this is the only provider from which we can get a signal indoors.

I'm a little confused because the OP doesn't mention needing to transfer his current number between sims, just the new number:

If you simply need to change the size of the sim that comes with the contract, that's quite easily done. It's transferring your current number with Vodafone that would be difficult to do.

    Hello

Yep, that was what I wanted. Fear it is too late now the sim only has been ordered.

    Thank you all the same

It's not late as you can cancel the order if you wish.

You can try Talkmobile that use the same signal.

    Also Lebara.
