It scares me to wonder what a basket case this country could become with a Lab/SNP Government!

I'm proud to be both Welsh & British - but wonder if SNP strategy is to create so much anti-Scots feeling amongst the English that - that they'll be glad to say good-bye to Scotland!

  • First day of official campaigning and I have had enough, and I really am a keen observer of politics. Big question today seems to be "what cuts will you make", and it seems none of the two main parties are going to answer pre election.

For the first time in my lifetime I am not(cannot) vote for any of the two main parties with any conviction. My issues really do range from both sides of the spectrum, from corrupt greedy big business and bankers etc to the abuse of the welfare state, even though I am a massive supporter of protecting the working man/woman when they hit bad times.

I am personally hoping for a little chaos, no real winner and everything thrown in the air. There is more to the contentment and quality of life of the electorate than GDP and money in general though important. I am just hoping that for the first time in decades the winner is going to be the people rather than a political party that wins for the sake of winning.

why would you think that the 'people' will be the winners from a little chaos?

Apart from when the banks are too big to fail of course, then you pay to mop up their mess until you're dead. ;)

Not investment bankers so much: Lehman was left to go bust if you recall.

Well it's possible to bog up anything if you put your mind to it.

On the other hand, if you pay me to implement your accounting system, you get one that bl00dy works, and does what it's supposed to do so you can change your process to fit in with the default functionality

    Fixed it for you
    I think....

To be honest you, getting the NHS to fit in with default commerical functionality is exactly what is needed.:)

I 100% agree with you, just haven't yet found a govt department that doesn't 'know' that what they do is different enough to require a bespoke solution....

Old news, now, but this is the "Rolls Royce" of waste. It's one thing to specify a system for £5 billion, spend £10 billion on it, and then find it does half what you want.....

    But......

    http://www.theguardian.com/society/2013/sep/18/nhs-records-system-10bn
An abandoned NHS patient record system has so far cost the taxpayer nearly £10bn, with the final bill for what would have been the world's largest civilian computer system likely to be several hundreds of millions of pounds higher, according a highly critical report from parliament's public spending watchdog.

MPs on the public accounts committee said final costs are expected to increase beyond the existing £9.8bn because new regional IT systems for the NHS, introduced to replace the National Programme for IT, are also being poorly managed and are riven with their own contractual wrangles.

I suspect the main issue with it was with monitering "targets". Their current system (in Barts/Whipps Cross anyway) is to keep your referral in a paper file until such time as a new 3-month 'Diary' is released. Grab enough files from the pile to fill it an hey presto, the 3 month target is "100% Achieved".

They use it at other hospitals. A walk-in X-ray department has a notice about aiming to see everyone within 30 minutes, after which you are entitled to complain. If you do complain, then the receptionist will lean over the pile of awaiting paper and politely inform you that the 30 minutes applies from when you go on the computer. "You're not on it yet, so wait until you are, and then another 30 minutes before complaining!".

I assume your default system operates the "FIFO" system for patients?

    Fit In, or F*** Off!

Well it wasn't my default system. (I don't do code.:)) And it was NHS back office, and NHS back office doesn't do patients.

But if, for example, you are a large organisation that is buying a lot of stuff, there is a very limited range of options available in terms of how to account for this process. Basically they boil down to (a) doing it properly or (b) not doing it properly. It is not rocket science. Or indeed brain surgery, for that matter.
