Oh - charlies_mum - stray dogs are the responsibility of the local council dog warden, not the rspca, that's why they wouldn't have dealt with it. If a dog is on private property and cruelty is suspected, then the rspca will get involved, if the dog is straying on public property/away from home, that's the dog warden.

The poor dog was old, blind, had malnutrition and was virtually lying dead on the pavement. My friend phoned the RSPCA who told her to phone the dog warden, but they would probably just put it to sleep. She took it in and has spent hundreds of pounds getting him better, and he has now had a couple of extra years happy life. He may be blind, but he always knows when you have snacks in your pocket :rotfl:

Do you know any of the families old frinds or family? It might be worth mentioning to one of them if you do that the cat has come home. It might be as simple as this - especially if you have only just noticed the cat. We moved house and one of our cats got out, she disappeared for a whole week and then turned up a bit bedraggled. If they have had her rehomed locally then it might be as simple as it having come back to it's home. Cats should be kept inside for 2 weeks after moving to a new home (not sure if the butter on the paws trick works) but maybe try this first, or call local vets to see if someone has reported their cat going missing and get some ads put up even if the CPL take the cat - at least the new owners will know where the cat is then.

The other thing you might want to do is find a nice secure box for it to sleep in and put some food down each day - just so that it is fed and has somewhere warm and dry to sleep while it is sorted out.

How could they do that to their cat? If they couldn't rehome her, they shoudl have had her put to sleep.

Niptuckfan, let us know what happens...

I'm sorry but you don't have your pet put to sleep just because you cant rehome it - that's just as bad as leaving it behind  . There are many rescue centres (such as the CPL) who would always take a cat and never destroy it.
