Washing machines can be rented rather than bought. They can also be sold rather than dumped when moving, which should reduce the cost a bit whatever is bought.

If the existing machine hasn't failed from being shoddily made, I'd just try to fix that however. 'beyond economical repair' is a rather over used term. It's always cheaper to buy one part than a whole piles of parts (aka a new machine). The issues are more about finding out which part you need and who does the fitting.

This of course is assuming you even need to replace a part. A lot of washing machines go down the dump with nothing worse than blocked pump filters, which could have been cleaned out at no cost.

I think ao.com rent machines. Better off buying local used imo.

After leaving some weekend time for exploratory fiddling with the old one in case I could locate a blockage or something I found this:

    http://www.very.co.uk/beko-wms6100w-1000-spin-6kg-load-washing-machine-white/928833048.prd

which was available but come Monday seems to have gone out of stock.

Anyone got any views on this - machine and supplier:

thanks for all the advice so far folks

The 5kg load is fine for me by the way.

    Don't bother with Very.
They open you a credit account (even if you don't want one), which leaves marks on credit files.

Plus, they are a horrible company, which also houses Littlewoods under their business, like Argos and Homebase.

I bought my Bush (note, not Bosch) from Argos six years ago for £200 and it's been fine ever since, despite three house moves.
But as others have said, check local selling pages on Facebook.

Interesting what you say about Very.

Something odd - in searching for that same machine online I came across it listed at the same price but also out of stock at, of all things, Woolworths. But the Woolworths web page looked like a strraight clone of Very - ie actually Very as well.

I did speak to the Coop person on the phone - a call centre of some sort but I must say I was very impressed by the way they answered various questions.

Bush you say? - Have seen them online - the days when Bush made anything, even their famous radios or Tellys are long gone I tbhink. But I have seen therir washing machines online. I passed them over - can I ask what your machine is?

Of course am still interestred if anyone has any views on that Co-Op sold Beko.

Another vote for Beko and ao.com, very impressed with my new washer, and two friends/family members also have one.

Many tthanks all, including feral for that post.

Thinking of going with co-op for the same machine although it will be a tad more - despite their banking woes working on the principle that they have a name to lose. And I was impressed by the person I dealt with.

    Never heard of ao.com

    Other folk any views on?

Also investigating mysteries of blanking caps- old machine was cold and hot fill.

Though suppose I can just turn off the little tap at the end of the hot pipe in the short term until I figure that out. Should be safe?

I have a Beko (can't remember model no W something) 8kg load for just over £200 had it 7 months now no problem.

Brought from AO, next day delivery and prices seem reasonable, haven't had any problems with anything we have purchased from them so couldn't tell you about their backup service though.

If you only want the machine for two years, I'd just call in to your local second hand domestic appliances shop. If you can get a second hand Zanussi for around £175, you'll be laughing.
