So annoying. I can't get the pics on via Dropbox. Is there an easier way?

Think this might do it. You can see the bottom edge has scraped away fairly easily. I've also been rough with it with the screwdriver over the top and it feels firm.

This shows the front edge - you might be able to see that the rust is going onto the other panel - I've tried to scrape out in between.

It does look more widespread on closer inspection. But again, it isn't caving in anywhere and the metal feels tough. Not sure how long this Ka is going to last without a new sill (or more) though. What do you think? :(

In the workshop at the moment (no rest & all that) and dropbox won't zoom properly on my tablet, but that looks very minor indeed. Get some course wet &dry, or even some 80 grit emery cloth (you use it dry but it really rips paint off) ant take the lot off. It would be a lot easier with an angle grinder & flap disk but, if you ain't got power that's no help!

Once it's all cleaned off, give it a couple of coats of rust killer then primer and paint it with stone-chip paint. From what you've shown it'll be good for a couple or more years at least :-)

OK thanks. I've just been out to Halfords to get more Hammerite and a brush, and more wet and dry but this time with a sanding block. I bought the aluminium oxide paper, various grits.

Bumped into a friend on the way back so have spent a lot of time chatting. So have to get back to car and get on with it. I'm glad you think it doesn't look too bad.. It's fairly solid underneath and the paint is coming off quite easily but I thought it looked spread over such a wide area!

My phone ran out of battery so no pic at the moment. The screwdriver is so good for getting the edges clear! Unfortunately this only works at the bottom as I can't get leverage for the other bits.

It is quite satisfying scraping it manually.. not too bad but it gets a bit messy and I can't see where the edges are. The ground in the residential car park at home is very knobbly so I need to take a blanket next time!

It does look like there is a lot more to do. If I can't get Hammerite on it this eve will it matter? I suppose if it rains I will have to wait for another dry day before I do it. So half job done..guess I will keep going for a bit and try not to leave it half finished tonight.

Right I have put on two coats of Hammerite. Came inside for bite to eat then will do another bit.

My neighbours are friendly. I moved here a year ago so don't know any of them but there are houses backing onto the communal car park. A man whose gate is beside my car at the moment came to chat and said he has a power tool - like a bristle brush that is powered and he will lend it to me next time - plus power supply! He said I could have done it in minutes but said I've done a good job. He thinks my car looks nice. So this has cheered me up a bit.:). He thinks it looks like surface rust. I'm sure it is as I'm really wacking it with the screwdriver and it is fine.

That's the thing about this sort of work - a lot of people are happy to see you out doing it (as long as you don't make the place look like a bomb site!). I'd imagine that goes double for seeing a woman getting her hands dirty with it, although i don't have personal experience with that :D

Good that someone who's seen it in person agrees that it looks like surface - you can only ever tell so much from photos but, having seen those ones on my laptop now, I still agree that there's nothing there to worry about and that the time you've put in now should keep it that way for a good while.
