Good that someone who's seen it in person agrees that it looks like surface - you can only ever tell so much from photos but, having seen those ones on my laptop now, I still agree that there's nothing there to worry about and that the time you've put in now should keep it that way for a good while.
Yes, it has become a nice way to get to know some neighbours. They seem..fascinated. Let's just say I've rediscovered the occasional importance of wearing high-waisted jeans..;)
My hands remain dirty - that Hammerite is a nightmare to get off!
Tonight I'll be putting the primer on. It was nearly dark by the time I was getting round to it last night. Didn't think it wise to add primer in the dark. It has not rained since so hopefully it will stay dry and it gives the metal time to dry out fully. It is strange that Hammerite rust remover doesn't seem to do that much at all.0 -
try to use a heat gun or a hair drier before putting primer on, this causes any condensation to evaporate and also the primer to dry quick before absorbing moisture0

I had a look and realised it might need a bit more sanding. I might have to leave it a few days..would that matter? It is raining now as well. Had bad headache so decided to relax last night. I only have eves free apart from Fri, before weekend.0

Won't matter at all, especially if you give it a final coat of rust converter when you get better weather.
When you commented that the converter doesn't seem to do much, that's because it does nothing on clean steel. In fact, some brands actually recommend that you let the metal develop a "flash" of surface rust before applying because it's the rust itself that's converted to a protective (usually phosphate) coating. No rust before applying = no protection0 -

OK thanks but I am putting on the rust. The rust is thinning slightly - is that all I can expect?0 -
It seems to have helped leaving it for a few days. I thought I had a pic but it hasn't taken.
The whole front bit of the panel is rusty, but with a lot of silver in the middle. The bottom part, to the bottom of the sill, is rust but that part is coming off easily with a screwdriver and coming up shiny. It is just taking time and my neck hurts so I have primed the top part in the meantime. I think I will Hammerite the bottom part to see whether it comes off that way, otherwise carry on with the screwdriver as it is peeling off like wallpaper - but is in a awkward position.
Beneath that the bit that attaches the sill is covered in rust so not sure how far I need to go. It does look like the whole sill might need replacing at some point - maybe it will last a while longer as people have said on here.
I'll try and post a pic later.:)0 -

The top part of the pic has grey primer on - previously treated rust. The middle is where I have scraped off easily with screwdriver to silver. The bottom is the rust that is coming off fairly easily, at the base of the sill. Does this all look ok? This is now a section at the front of the sill approx. 10" long with rust along the top and bottom part, the bottom bit being thinner and scraping off to shiny metal - subject to my neck holding out!0

That's looking good - nothing there that should give you any issues for a good few years once you've finished0

Brill. Thanks for the feedback.
I'll need to keep my eye on it every few weeks and there are signs of rust further along the sill. So I will do it in stages and try to keep on top of it.0
