Do you put in for coworker's presents?

We used to put in for birthdays, leaving dos, weddings, etc. It's a lovely thing to get a gift at work on your birthday.
However, despite being a small team, this added up a bit and especially for managers who would usually put in a bit more.
So when we had an office move and merger we took the opportunity to scrap it for birthdays and we just do cards. We still usually do a collection when somebody leaves though.
The reality was it didn't feel acceptable not to contribute, though nobody would really know if you hadn't as you could just pass it on to the next person. I think that's why it felt unfair, and now (as we are still a small team) sometimes managers just get small gifts for those they manage so nobody feels under pressure to contribute.0
