what ever you do which causes damage to someone or something
through your actions, well ,you are responsible.

You should pay for it. There is no question about it.
All the time I hear people complaining ,well he got in the way ,or he should not have it there etc
You cause an action, you pay simple.

Did you hear the one about the lady that backed her car into a tree ? she said the tree should not have been planted there !!!!!!!!!!!
    I rest my case.

Whether or not the story is real or not, I don't know...

but you sir, are talking utter rubbish. Getting your phone out at a football match and holding it up is daft. I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke, I wouldn't even consider holding my phone up if I thought we were about to score. It's bloody pandemonium when we do and every football fan who goes a game knows that.

The woman who reversed her car into a planted tree is completely different. That's a solid object. You don't expect a mobile phone frittering around by your head when you're at a football match.

So no sir, you are wrong in my opinion.
  • I'm shocked at how most are replying to this - where are your manners, your decency, your respect for other peoples belongings?!

My answer is why are you even asking?!

You should have offered immediately. It was your arm that knocked the phone, not the football. You jumped up carelessly and knocked the phone out of his hand - it was 100% your fault.

I would have offered immediately if I'd done it but then I don't go leaping around the place carelessly not caring who or what I hit.

Be more careful and learn some manners - pay up - you should have already done so.

Didn't your mother bring you up to do this?!

I don't think I would feel under obligation to make a contribution, but I think the offer of £20 or so towards the cost of repair would be a decent thing to do.

I am also VERY surprised that the owner of the phone was so reasonable about the situation.

I would maybe agree 50/50, but it's still the owner who was stupid enough to have it flying around at a football match. Imagine if someone held a phone above your head then you got up. You wouldn't be expected to pay. This thread is bordering on the stupid.

Being a bit of a traditionalist and thinking fans of "nu-footy" should all be shot at dawn; those photographing themselves with their selfie-sticks (and others) at football (and as an ex-United ST holder I know this from experience) should be more careful with their electronic equipment.

Some of us are actually there to support our team and not to provide entertainment for those who decide to visit Old Trafford/Anfield/New Highbury because it goes with our Merc/BMW, Rolex and indicates our social status to our neighbours/colleagues.

For those of like mind, I cannot recommend enough the delights of non-league football, where for example this Saturday I will be at Halesowen Town to cheer on my team, FC United Of Manchester in its endeavours to escape the Northern Premier League - Premier Division, after missing out in the playoffs for four seasons running.

It'll be interesting to see who bites on this...

My phone is firmly in a zipped pocket until half-time because I'm not so addicted to it I can't bear to not have it in my hand. One time the bloke next to me (I do know him I should add) got so excited when we scored that he picked me up and waved me around over his head! Simply jumping up with your arms in the air is completely normal behaviour at a match.
  • I've taken my camera to Watford (and been told off by security!!) but it's usually just to take a photo of my lad with Harry the Hornet - and I've always got it strapped to my wrist if it's out.

Lots of people seem to be writing replies forgetting what it's like on a terrace in the middle of a game. It's not the place to be standing around holding your phone at arms length.
